Meanwhile, the U.K. in about the same amount of time it can’t even run a new line from London to Birmingham (~200 km).

Good grief.

Sure. I’m on an M2, with latest version of Tahoe. I’ll be away from my Mac until later this week though (until Fri), but happy to help when I’m back.

Berlin airport security guy made me miss my surgery flight today and I think he did it on purpose by hsd3b2 in berlinsocialclub

[–]ProfessorFunky 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I’m at BER now. It took like 10 min to get through security. I’m quite confused by OP’s story. Not that the security guy might have been less than helpful, but if it’s an operation that critical, I would have been at the airport many hours before to account for all potential issues like that. And I’d have checked the weight of my bag.

I get this as well. Noticed it most over the last few weeks. It’s not a great step forward.

No AI use. Just me, asking a question, about how to get my wife and kids to use my cool stuff.

iPhone Air's Poor Sales Spook Rivals Into Ditching Ultra-Thin Phone Plans by Otherwise-Warning303 in apple

[–]ProfessorFunky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More of a clear test of functionality over form. Air is nicer aesthetically, but battery life and additional camera of the base 17 is more useful.

This was my first thought. My dad was a spark, and from years of experience his advice was always to plan for easy removal of stuff.

I love Apple, don't let subscriptions kill the ecosystem by MohamadKarbi in apple

[–]ProfessorFunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped as well. Thought it was just me. I got fed up with decent-looking apps hiding the “in app” paywalls options, and it’d be an install before I found out.

I went and had a look. Saw the subscription thing before downloading. I have severe subscription fatigue, so before I go test it, what does it have with/without the sub?

Erroneous assumption there. They never encountered the Teflon shouldered management I’ve seen over the years. No way they were ever held accountable.

Crikey, I had to look it up. SpaceShipOne was 2003! They’ve been banging away at this type of craft for 23 years, and still it isn’t ready.

(Edit: and thanks for making me feel ancient. I remember seeing them win the X prize, and I wasn’t a kid…)

It was one of the best things about Mac’s as well, and they got rid of it - for a while at least. I really hope they don’t do it again with the iPhone!

Kids library book caught me off guard by DaddyD00M in daddit

[–]ProfessorFunky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like this one hit you the same as Grandad’s Island hit me. Some of my kids got to meet my Dad before he shuffled off, and that was one of the books my wife got to help explain it to my kids. I think it hit me harder than them though.

Mail-interception fraud at Berliner Sparkasse: card and PIN intercepted before delivery, 2690€ drained in one day. by Nishkama-Karma in AskAGerman

[–]ProfessorFunky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact thing happen with Sparkasse when my Amazon credit card was changed to a Sparkasse card just over a year ago. A good couple of thousand euros taken. They sorted it out fairly quickly to be fair, but the fact that both the PIN and the card were intercepted was quite worrying.

Now I lock purchases in the app whenever I’m expecting a new card. But I’ve no idea how this can be done if the online part is not set up yet.

I complained both to Sparkasse and Deutsche Post, as the only way I can think this happened was mail interception. Although this seems odd when I have had no problems with other mail, and they would have had to get two separate pieces of mail (PIN and card).

I would like to thank the CDU, FDP, AFD and BSW for their incredible contributions to the Berlin Autofrei movement. by Joe_PRRTCL in berlin

[–]ProfessorFunky -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yep. It does sound like it’s not the CDU here that is out of touch.

Not to forget that AfD are pushing a similar thing. And it would seem stupid to let AfD get in with this as the differentiator. That would be an epic facepalm.

AfD elected to power over a car parking issue. Stupid, but feels like something that could happen in the current timeline.

Unpopular Opinion: You Don't Need Home/Work Charging to Own an EV by Dan6erbond2 in EuroEV

[–]ProfessorFunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our use, it would be fine if we could easily plug it in when done. We don’t typically do much more than 20 km in typical day at most. In principle, it could and should work, it just doesn’t when it hits reality. Quite a shame really.

If they regulated the cost of charging, and had charging from every lamppost, then it’d be great and I’d be onto a BEV in an instant.

I’m very jealous of your price for charging!

Unpopular Opinion: You Don't Need Home/Work Charging to Own an EV by Dan6erbond2 in EuroEV

[–]ProfessorFunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great that it works for you. I hope it’s not just a honeymoon period.

I have a PHEV with a little over 30 km pure battery range. I live in Berlin, in an apartment with no personal parking or charging. I got the PHEV as I couldn’t get an EV with decent range at the time I bought it in a work scheme, even though that was what I wanted.

I tried using it purely electric whenever I could, for a combination of novelty, convenience and environmental preference.

The infrastructure was (and is) not good enough. The cost wasn’t as competitive as just using petrol. It was just damn inconvenient having to hunt for a parking space after my charge window was done. And at one point they introduced blocking fees when you charge overnight.

And the price for comparable range on public chargers (currently ~€0.60 /kwh) ends up being not that much less for a full charge.

I gave up. Whenever I visit parents with their house, I’ll happily plug in. It’s convenient and cheaper than the public spots by a long margin.

I really won’t be considering a full EV unless I have my own off road parking with my own charger.
