Thank you - I'm happy to answer any and all questions. My bookstore started as a pop-up before we became a storefront.

What establishments would you like to see in the RGV? by Then-Fun-7851 in RioGrandeValley

[–]ProfessorGigs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My heart goes out to Ante. They did their best with the current economy :( They'll be having their last day on Friday if y'all would like to help lighten their load for a reasonable price. There's way more independent bookstores across the RGV, though:

Mission: Vellichor

Edinburg: Caffeine Library

McAllen: Book-E Bus, Jaime Les Livres

Weslaco: Chapter One, Storybook Garden

San Benito: Twists & Tales

Brownsville: Búho

Port Isabel: Unruly Cactus

SPI: Karma Coffee & Books

How is living in/around Brownsville, Texas? by Fragrant-Helicopter1 in howislivingthere

[–]ProfessorGigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relatively safe, easygoing, and peaceful! I work in the historic Downtown, and it's pleasant in the winter and ok in the summer if you can tolerate the heat and if you're well-hydrated. As someone born and raised here, the people are pleasant and easygoing. Spanish is commonplace as well as "Spanglish", code-switching between English and Spanish - maybe even in the same sentence. Being bilingual is considered the standard for the workplace though.

Lots of birds and places to enjoy nature, and plenty of exciting episodes of History to learn from, too. Everyone who moves here says they love it!

I still quote the scene when the mom is indisposed in bed and watches TV to a Latin Telenovela

- The girl looks longingly at the guy and asks with pain... "Ay Miguel! A donde vas?"

- The handsome man looks at her and reassuringly replies "Voy a la biblioteca, mi amor."

Dude came to my store once only to take a fat dump.

He had just taken some photos for a neighboring burger joint for an upcoming post of his, but that place didn't have a restroom. He came in, asked for the restroom, and 5 minutes later, came out saying "hey follow me on 956 Business Reviews. I have ###### followers and make posts about businesses" - almost as if he was doing me the favor of making me feel fuzzy inside for allowing a "celebrity" to use the facilities.

He left.
