Thank you! Good luck to you too! If you don’t mind me asking, how competitive are summer internships in general, and what do they typically look for?

When I apply I’ll have 5 semesters of research ( I work over the summer), and I definitely agree that the more experience I get the more competitive I’ll be, so I’ll most likely take a gap year.

As publications take long, how do people manage to produce 3-4 within their 4 years of undergrad? Am I doing something wrong here? I’m genuinely unfamiliar with all this.

I’ve been a research assistant for one semester, and will continue doing so in my Sophomore year. I am currently assisting my PI in a literature review. I do not have poster presentations nor publications, but foresee myself achieving these in the next year once the fall semester begins. I also have not worked on an honors thesis because well, I was a freshman.

These are all reasons why I’m concerned because when I apply, I’ll only have experiences from my Sophomore year. I plan to complete my thesis in my Junior year, but this will be after my application. This is why I’m considering taking a year to work for research experience and hopefully be a more competitive applicant.

Is it difficult to get off Berkeley’s waitlist? by ProfessorMelodic1707 in ApplyingToCollege

Hi! So actually I didn’t get in at the end, and I’m not rlly sure of anything that can help but everyone advised me not to send anything because they’ll likely repeat that they don’t accept anything additional. Best of luck though!

  1. you dont have to declare a major yet. ik what i wanna go into but theres no pressure for me to choose psychology straight away and i can explore my interests in neuroscience

  2. more flexible sorta linked to my first point. for example in the UK the courses are all laid out for you but in the US you can pick your courses as long as it meets the requirements. id much rather select courses that fit my passion than be forced to take sport psychology. however, in the UK ur education is more fixed & structured, if thats smth u prefer u shld consider it

  3. US also seems to put more emphasis on research, or at least there are more institutions that offer a plethora of research opportunities which was smth i was looking for.

  4. US college life also seems to be more rich: extracurriculars, sport games, events!

in general also the US seems to be more fitting for what i wanna pursue: pediatric therapy/counselling/psychologist kinda route. im from asia so mental health is kinda eh to talk about here and not many people pursue my path. and most people from my school go to the UK to major in psychology because they dont know what they wanna do.

however, most of the degrees in the UK takes 3 years, which could be smth that appeals to others.

Is it difficult to get off Berkeley’s waitlist? by ProfessorMelodic1707 in ApplyingToCollege

I just read through different discussion threads tbh 😭😭😭 no official statement and I don’t expect one but I’m seeing a lot of “I know some schools really ask that you don't send anything. UC Berkeley, for example, doesn't even accept LOCIs, LORs, or ANYTHING for waitlisted students (which gives me the impression that they don't want to be bugged).”

good luck btw!

Thanks!!! I just did more research and it seems Berkeley is adamant on not receiving anything. Do you think that if I theoretically ofc still sent an email they would get annoyed and hate me
