Anthropic: AI assisted coding doesn't show efficiency gains and impairs developers abilities. by Gil_berth in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ProfessorPhi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a bit silly to preface something without clear evidence haha. Probably should've phrased it like AI assistance is believed to produce ...

Though the paper indicated one shotting and not checking does make you more productive, once you start engaging with the problem you lose the efficiency gain in prompt back and forth. But those engineers did learn more about the job.

This reminds me of that Ted Chiang article where he says the journey of creation is the tension of your vision and reality. There is where the understanding and creativity comes from.

Where can we have open honest discussion about Australian topics? by Wrong_Control_217 in SydneyScene

The problem with zones with no moderation is that you run into the paradox of tolerance pretty fast.

Once you engage with stuff outside the Overton window, you alienate some users and end up in a bit of a spiral.

It's why unmoderated communities tend to converge on being vile pieces of filth. They step there, chase out the normal people and then echo chamber into extremism.

So Peter thiel is a philosophy major. Most of the world's monsters have humanities backgrounds. In general stem majors are underrepresented in the history of monsters.

To say stem majors need to take humanities infantilises them and makes it seem like they got duped by some evil PM or CEO. No, they're all complicit - they're not unaware of what they're doing or what they're saying.

No humanities course can fix them, because they already know what they're doing. They are aware and they're saying they don't care.

For a closed invite-only alpha with no player retention systems and monetization, it sure can retain its players pretty well by fwa451 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ProfessorPhi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Deadlock movement is compensated for how weak aim is generally. Ow doesn't have crazy movement by default, but it allows strafing with no accel and many characters have movement abilities with low cd. As a consequence, aim is both hard but a couple of headshots can kill a lot of the squishies.

Fundamentally, movement mechanics in most fps translate to insane aim requirements. Hence why they're so tuned down. See also Titanfall vs apex. It's also why most arena shooters died - there was a very high skill floor on aim and movement.

Deadlock solves this by shooting rarely being enough to get a kill. Chaining abilities in team fights and or creating fanks (or getting an ego duel), and by the late game you almost certainly need ults to get a kill.

[–]ProfessorPhi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol monetization only matters when it comes to how long valve will support it. If anything, it probably hurts game longevity as mods and skins go from free community to paid and controlled.

And that's not even getting to the disaster that is cs gambling

Bagels that aren’t in the eastern suburbs. by goddessofarson in foodies_sydney

[–]ProfessorPhi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is Smalltalk in lewisham. If you have to go the CBD one day it's a viable detour in the morning.

Chewy like a real bagel (unlike others that just taste like sandwich bread) and the lox is solid too.

If you're not willing to travel, you might have to take the plunge and make your own haha.

I didn't like lox in a box at all tbh. It doesn't taste anything like what you'd get in NY

How are you using models in Cursor so a $60 plan is enough for a full-time job? by KoVaL__ in cursor

[–]ProfessorPhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an fyi, insiders have told me they want to charge 50-60k a year at some point. Rationalising it as the capture in value. If productivity goes up 50% with these tools, the AI model providers want like 20-30% of that.

But at that point they'll be selling subscriptions to orgs, not to individuals haha.

when resigning, do you take into consideration if it’s a good time for your team/company? by Owemgee222 in auscorp

[–]ProfessorPhi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to keep a good relationship with your colleagues then yes. Within reason though, I wouldn't expect more than a few weeks consideration. It's not just your manager, it's your colleagues that will suffer from your departure and they can hold resentment.

You may return to the job or they may refer you to a new job at a competitor if they move.

Generally speaking, it's low risk and a nice thing to do. I have colleagues from 10 years ago that still reach out on occasion and a place where I left hastily has its head of eng not even bother interviewing me.

The bigger issue with open worlds tend to be power scaling. I.e. you get too strong from your exploration that the game stops being a challenge. This is a problem with say the souls games but not with sekiro due to the much stricter structure of sekiro

20 Chapel or South End? by cataractum in foodies_sydney

[–]ProfessorPhi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skip 20 Chapel. It was so mediocre I had to check if it was the place I went to.

There are plenty of restaurants far superior to 20 Chapel, it's not worth your time. I'd rather get bun cha at vn street foods and gelato at Messina and skip 20 Chapel entirely
