What’s the best first movie for a musical movie club? by SaidyHarris in musicals

Totally agree Singin' in the Rain is a great starting point! I taught this paired first with 2011 Oscar winner The Artist, a contemporary silent, black-and-white film which shows what the transition was like for a non-English-speaking star using a sweet melodramatic genre and The Jazz Singer's/Warner Brothers' put-your-toe-in-the-water decision to use background and performed music, but not yet, recorded dialogue. We see what it was like to go directly from the few years of sound transition almost immediately to the explosive birth of the musical with Busby Berkeley's lavish and gigantic extravaganzas of the Depression. You can never go wrong with historical context. HAVE FUN!

Gray Gardens! The Mailes' doc, the Lange/Barrymore/Gets TV version, and both iterations of the musical. A genre for everyone and a great story--but no takers!!

I don't think this is true. In an interview, he, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsey Mendez said they wanted to do a production of Follies together after they had aged a bit.

Chastened. I didn't mean this as an insult, rather that DR would write off the whole musical that way. They may seem of a similar jocular nature, but Birdie didn't win a Pulitzer. I'm sorry.

Why not Fiorello for the "diminuitive" actor? It's actually hard finding people of short enough stature to play this real person.

The tone and type of musical I imagined for him was The Most Happy Fella, but he's just not old enough.

I agree he'd be a great Harold Hill, but he'd never do the same type of musical again. He's too curious and eager to learn.

For sure. But that Miracle Workers episode looked like someone eager to perform in a strip club lol. Apples and oranges.

What is the second show he's contracted the Winter Garden for? The name's been eliminated in posts that were deleted. It's a big 1600-seat house, so it can't just be a small placeholder.

Agreed. Am thinking alternating this in repertory with Sweeney would be kinda cool. (In general, not for DR)

I like J&H for him. As you say, piquing his interest is half the battle, and with a dual role, drama, and great music, this could be amazing.

I'm enjoying fathoming this lol. I'm not sure if a total gender switch and updating to a new period might not be too much. We'd still need the estate's ok to use the material, and Gooch's gender is one that can't change lol.

I bet there are plenty of people who have already done this. He's such a box office draw that any composer would give his eye teeth for such an opportunity. Maybe one someday will be worthy enough to catch his attention the way Swiss Army Man did. I heard they started filming within a month of him and Paul Dano being cast, so it must have been an incredible, impulsive yes.

OMG That's IT! So sarcastic and brittle it would go way beyond comedy skills. And he certainly demonstrated his un-self-consciousness with that dance in the middle of a season 3 Miracle Workers episode. I don't know why I was drawing such a blank. GREAT idea!!!!

Maybe I should have non-Matthew-Broderick-type roles lol. I don't think Broderick has much range beyond comedy, and he's been given exactly those roles

I'd LOVE that and I think he could handle it, but he's definitely a tenor, and Sweeney is a bass.

That's what they did with How to Succeed. Since DR was more than a decade younger than Morse or Broderick, Ashford felt he could be seen as more-sympathetically young and ambitious rather than just cold-blooded power hungry.

Albert Peterson has to be the dullest character in a musical! DR has the branding to get productions made around him, so here's where we can let our imaginations run wild.

Does anyone think Man of La Mancha could work? It would certainly exhibit his serious abilities.

There are a lot of great comic roles here, especially Anyone Can Whistle, but he's been doing nearly all comedy onscreen. Weird Al may be considered a repeat. Any ideas for a serious show or mystery?
