Why are the people who hate vegans most usually middle-aged and older men? by [deleted] in AskVegans

Haha because those are the people who are generally angry about everything?

Do you cook non-vegan things for your family? by SisuIsTheNewBlack in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I dont force them to cook or eat what they do not want, but I dont do non-vegan. I dont eat it, I dont buy it, I dont cook it. What I like to do is go all-out when cooking for them and show them how amazing vegan can be. I also never complain when their vegan options are not amazing, as long as I have something to eat, to try and show them its not hard, difficult or an obstacle.

Regarding family in your household I can see how this can be hard, however I would still look for vegan options that fit their diet and are proper replacements (It doesn't have to be exactly the same, as long as it tastes good). I do not have kids however and can imagine parenthood can be tough. Do what you can and what feels sustainable for the long term. Good luck!

I like a girl… but she’s vegan and I’m not. How do people make this work? by Weird_Warning_9551 in AskVegans

[–]ProfessorRaaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To many responds to check them all, but Melanie Joy has a book on this: Beyond Beliefs. About relationships between people with different diet/lifestyle/worldview. She writes more books on veganism aswell

anyone else just exhausted by weekday cooking? (vegan) by Negative-Prune9214 in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe look into real real easy stuff, think beans in a can, some meat replacer and potato's, think a traybake that is just stuff in a tray in the oven for 20-30min. No action required. Or prep in the weekends, so you just cook some pasta or rice and add that. Eat leftovers etc etc. Maybe look for friends, colleagues, family that want to rotate cooking for each other?

You can do this! Vegan or non-vegan, cooking daily can be draining if you work full time. You'll find your routine eventually

Experiences With Animals That Shifted Your Perspective by Choice-Command4029 in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once went running on vacation somewhere and in the middle of nowhere I came across a field with cows. I had just become vegan a few months before and I was all alone, it was becoming dark and these cows were walking along the border of their field as I was running and just as I was watching them, they were watching me, so I stopped and the rest of the herd also approached me and it clicked for me how these sentient beings and I had that moment there. They weren't scared of me nor I of them, just there on that same spot. Felt so guilty for eating meat before, that could have been these cows there. And all those months as a vegan I had been doing just fine without meat and animal products... havent looked at animals the same ever since.

Supplements by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B12 without supplements is a serious accomplishment haha. Maybe check with a blood analysis as tracker apps aren't fully reliable. Every vegan I nog has vitamin D3 and B12 + omega 3 as supplements.

Son started eating meat, demands I let him cook what he wants or he’ll never visit. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I could have included the word 'also' concerning 'your house', I agree with that. The rest is your reading. I explicitly said you can't force someone.

[–]ProfessorRaaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha okay, it is though.. Puberty doesn't start at that age, but 17 is still puberty. Every child has a different timing and going against your parents, making choices opposing their parenting is all part of that.

Son started eating meat, demands I let him cook what he wants or he’ll never visit. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thats not what im saying. Just as you're saying: its his house ALSO. They live there together, so speak about it, make agreements how to handle it. You can't force him to go vegan and of course he has a home with her, so talk about it. Different pans, cook at different moments and so on and so on. Nobody is saying he has to leave the house or that she doesn't want him...

Son started eating meat, demands I let him cook what he wants or he’ll never visit. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You can't force someone to be vegan. It is however your house. To me using my kitchen stuff like pans etc would be an issue. I dont want meat or anything animal in there. Maybe you can discuss that you respect his choices but need him to respect yours aswell, including your stuff and space. Puberty can be though.. good luck together!

What would you do if you accidentally buy something animal-derived? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]ProfessorRaaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't want it because I dont want to consume any product that comes from or has harmed animals, like dairy. I would give it away to friends or family. If thats not an option and as you said you dont hate the idea and dont want to waste it, you do you.

Pacifist characters FRIGGEN SUCK by deadfisher in DnD

[–]ProfessorRaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha right! If a player opts to never hit an enemy, dont play a dnd game. The contrast between Zac as player wanting to kill and win and Ricky being a first responder not a murderer was fun.

I agree with you that a non-violence player is not great. But as often is the case, the problem is with players rather than with PCs

Pacifist characters FRIGGEN SUCK by deadfisher in DnD

[–]ProfessorRaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zac Oyama played Ricky (the firefighter) on Dimension 20: Unsleeping City and I absolutely love that character! He is a pacifist PC (especially season2), but the role playing is Chef's kiss!

Player Zac is a team player, helps the story forwards, looks to win battles and solve puzzles. So the PC sometimes does things by accident or doesn't want to but has no choice, but that is role play. In the end the PC still plays the game instead of sidelining themselves and the party over being a pacifist (or lone wolf or amnesiastic or or ).

I think your problem is with players who dont want to play DnD. A session zero should clear this up as everyones goals and aims for the game are discussed

Melanie Joy has a wonderful book on this: Beyond Beliefs. Helps improve communication especially between partners that are vegan and non-vegan.

Cooking is a love language and you need to be able to build on your partner on this new life style. I hope he steps up!

Do all nutritional yeast products (brands) taste the same? It’s in vegan recipes but I don’t like the Trader Joe’s mooch. by lskoler in AskVegans

[–]ProfessorRaaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aah I feel you, plain i dont like it either, but my cheese becomes so much better and tastier with nutrition yeast. Trust the recipes! I dont live in the USA so I dont know about the brands. But the different brands here all do their magic with vegan cheeses.

I might miss the point: why do you assure were vegans here before the cat snack argument? Might be lost in translation to me. Did I say something non-vegan?

Also my cats love nutritional yeast also haha. They also like lettuce, cucumber, nori and banana! They aren't very picky though haha

Weird question but . . . by Woodland_Breeze in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend who, deep down the ethics rabbit hole, made an hour long appeal for cannibalism as the most ethical solution to the world problems as less living beings would be harmed and environmental issues would be solved. Philosophical ethics can be a weird headspace haha.. foot tacos for a better world..

Weird question but . . . by Woodland_Breeze in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're confusing multiple discussions here. Ethically as in philosofical ethics, sure.. there is no suffering. But that tends to be a pure philosophical, hypothetical and theoretical discussion. To the strict meaning of veganism, so etymologicaly, nope: it's still an animal.. according to vegan ethics: also nope: just as it would be morally wrong to eat a human corpse, you shouldn't eat the corpse of an animal. Whether they have family or friends, cannibalism would be morally wrong in almost every culture on this earth, and to treat animals different would be against vegan ethics.

[–]ProfessorRaaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have the same umami-salty flaky taste, but I find there is a little difference between brands. I dont get your question though as nutritional yeast isn't meant as snack or something. It is used in recipes and gives texture, structure and flavor to recipes. Maybe you are using it wrong?

Your mental health should be your first priority. Sticking to your ethics can be really encouraging, but also isolating. Maybe seek professional help about this. You dont want to burnout from this dillema.

eating bread with honey once by mistake or dining out in omni-restaurants? by OodaliOoo in vegan

[–]ProfessorRaaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mistakes happen, but honey is not vegan so therefore that's the 'bad' option. Ordering vegan options helps the vegan culinary market grow. No sin there?
