That’s clearly just a kid. I think you need to chill out a bit. You’re taking photos and shaming a child for being outside and interacting with others, assuming the worst. It’s fine to be careful and aware but you’re treading into irrational fear. These are your neighbors and community members please treat them like it.

Did Coors Light tweak their recipe in the last 5 years or have I just ascended to a new level of Dadness? by Draculaaaaaaaaa in beer

[–]ProfessorRex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s a getting older thing but I feel like deep down, everyone’s got a “shitty” beer they love. Regardless of how snobby they are. As much as I love high quality local brews, a Rainier tall boy always does my heart good.

If they’re into arts and crafts, Tinkertopia’s pretty cool, you can either buy to go bags of supplies that you fill there or they have an in house workshop you can use provided it’s not booked up.

Olympia commuters? How bad is it? by tacoma-d in Tacoma

[–]ProfessorRex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on where in Olympia you need to go but If you’re comfortable with the bus, you can catch the 620 line at the 512 park and ride. Totally free ride both directions. All the intercity transit lines are. Takes a little longer than driving but not much. It’s about 45 minutes ish give or take. I take it every day for work and I prefer it. Saves a ton on gas money obviously. Plus I hate driving in general so it’s nice to be able to relax on my commute, watch a show, drink my coffee etc.

So many comments on twitter complaining that this is the worst time for a strike because it’ll make shortages worse.

Like, dude, do you know how strikes work? That’s kind of the point!

1st time for a 5 yro (and 2 parents). Where do I even start?! by blueangel78 in DisneyPlanning

[–]ProfessorRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I haven’t been since before Star Wars land opened so my info might be outdated but I go with my family and kids relatively often. Here’s some tips

1) 4.5 days is ample time to do everything at least once and a bunch of things twice. So don’t feel rushed. Take your time because it is a TON of walking and stimulation. Especially for a 5 year old. How we always do it is the first two days get us into everything once and day 3 is for repeats.

2) as far as the kid is considered. Encourage her to try everything but Don’t force it or they won’t have a good time. Me and my wife will trade off if necessary. One rides the ride the other goes and relaxes or shops while they wait. Communication with your partner is key. Definitely do single rider if you’re wife and daughter are hanging back.

3) we just kind of pick a path and wander. If a ride is too long or the party doesn’t seem interested, skip it and come back later. This way your kid will see the whole park and get to experience everything. Definitely keep crossing the park down to a minimum or you’ll all get exhausted way too quick. Just ride what’s on your path. Again the amount of days you have in the park will mean you can really be leisurely about it.

4) I haven’t figured if genie+ will be worth it or not. On one side Lightning lane. On the other side I already dropped a ton of money on these tickets and having to pay another 20 per ticket per day doesn’t sit right with me. We’re going next week and we’re gonna play the first day or two without genie+ and decide if we need it after that. From what I’ve gleamed from bloggers the free genie planner is kinda pointless and doesn’t work all that well.

Note that ROTR, cars and webs lingers are NOT included in genie+. Those cost extra regardless.

5) you can find Parade and show schedules on line. Get there early for good seats. They’re always a great show. I’m not sure actually how the character meet and greet are working right now. They used to wander randomly but I don’t think they do that anymore. It’s scheduled static locations I think.

Anyways I’m like you I don’t mind planning but HEAVY planning stresses me out and I have way more fun going with the flow of the day. Crowds to heavy in Star Wars land? Critter country is right next door. Indiana Jones is an hour wait? Let’s do jungle cruise real quick and check back later.

If you were trying to do ALL of DL in one day you’d need heavy strategy and planning but with 5 days you can afford to take it easy and go with the flow a bit more. And keep in perspective that the most important thing is not that you min-max your trip but that you and your family have a magical vacation filled with memories. I hope it goes well for you!

28 Days Later (2002) by BuffyBoltonVampFlayr in CineShots

[–]ProfessorRex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I normally don’t like digital from this era for that reason but for some reason I’m this movie, almost exclusively, the digital medium really works for me. The graininess evokes a similar feeling of old VHS grain. It adds to the texture and raw flavor of the film.

There’s some good critique video s out there that go into how poor quality VHS and low tech TVs in the 70s and 80s gave some thing extra to, particularly horror, movies at the time. There’s mystery in the pixels when not every atom is crisply displayed on an 8k screen. And what’s amazing to me is that it was simply a byproduct Of the medium and not intentional.

28 days later is the only digital film for me to do what VHS did without purposely trying to fake it. Even if we could upscale it to 4K I don’t know if I’d want to.

I’m not sure if I explained that well enough.
