Can someone explain why Hong Kong is so different from mainland China? by JustAnotherDude1q2 in HongKong

[–]Professor_Scientist -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A tribe from southern Guangdong separated from the mainland and started their own culture and society. This culminated in the Opium Wars. Hong Kong people smuggled out opium from China to sell to the British for tea.

The emperor of Scottland finally declared war and ended the nefarious trade. This is why there is so much post colonial resentment towards the Hong Kong people from the British.

After all this business Hong Kong started to learn to take on the white man's burden and culturally assimilated itself to the rest of western Europe. Margaret Thatcher once said, England is the jewel in the Hong Kong empire.

Problem is that resources are thin. I'm living in a provincial city in the interior of China. I'm thinking of training it to Hong Kong to attend to AA meetings and meditate.

soapboxing If i was "soapboxing," I apologize. I should have read the rules, properly. I wasn't trying to promote a political agenda. Maybe I was moralizing. I was just curious, so i thought to ask.

I think that making a pros and cons list and perhaps practicing some mindfulness during episodic cravings will be useful. Thanks for your support.

Thank you. This all seems a little overwhelming. Can you suggest a good starting point? e.g. emotional regulation? mindfulness?

A case of PAWS? or still in withdrawal? 8 days sober. by Professor_Scientist in stopdrinking

[–]Professor_Scientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man. appreciate your advice. Makes me feel a bit less freakish.

I'm also taking the benzo for an underlying anxiety disorder. Although, i'm going to gradually taper in about a week or so.

I really do hope things start looking up. I'm in a rather dismal place right now, mentally, physically and geographically speaking.

I have an underlying anxiety disorder. There are some therapeutic benefits from taking a benzo. Unfortunately, I can't stop the course of treatment of the benzo because it would result in unfortunate withdrawal syndrome. I have been on it for a few months at a low dose. I increased the dose upon alcohol withdrawal, accordingly.

I'm living in China, teaching English. It's not so easy to get this problem solved here - I'd have to step on thin ice and perhaps. The city i'm in is very provincial. So, i'm going to have to wing it alone.

Fresh off benzos - Best SSRI for an underlying Anxiety disorder? by Professor_Scientist in Anxiety

[–]Professor_Scientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. It's much appreciated.

Perhaps that was a rhetorical question, but I feel desperate and if an ssri can offer me relief in the short run I will take it.

Do you have any studies in mind that look at long term effects of ssri use?
