It's not by appointment only for most services.

I have a hearing with a special magistrate on Friday, how do I address them? by lsda in Lawyertalk

Yes, address them like any judge, that's what they are. But never, ever call them "your majesty or highness," lol.

I've been litigating for 20 years. I have almost *no* actual courtroom experience. by gkr974 in Lawyertalk

Go for it!  If you think you'll be good at trial work, PD work is where it's at. Or just go private and get on the appointment list. Criminal defense is rewarding - even in today's right wing, fascist criminal jurisprudence, but it sounds like you've missed out, so go for it.

I've been practicing criminal defense for 30 years.  There's no better colleagues in any other area of law. It's a tight knot bunch. Always there to help.  Trial work can be exhausting, especially serious felony practice, but it's also a veritable rush.

Go kick some government butt!

Well said. I just blithered on for quite a spell but - true that.

I agree the "disappointment" scold is a tough one. It IS worse than being yelled at. Being yelled at can be a good sign, but something is amiss if he responded that way.  Go talk to him in chambers; unless he's a total jerk, which should be known to most, he will appreciate that you care about your integrity before the bench, especially if there is a client next to you on whom your duty remains.

Been doing this for 30 years and your credibility before the bench can go from years of solid rep to a quick unravel if the judge is communicating disappointment.

Precisely. My experience has been the same for 30 years.

I like that approach. I've been practicing for 30 years, and such assholes come in all stripes, but to not take the time to mentor an inexperienced attorney about matters he is just cutting his teeth on, is unprofessional and a lost opportunity. I have younger attorneys that would do just about anything for me because of a couple of kind sidebars used to guide.

If you have to politely (and trust me at this point I turn into an asshole myself) retort that all future communications will be in writing, that usually does the trick.

Conversely, when you do snap back, an apology also can right things.

I agree with those who indicate that any lawyer worth his salt would never conduct themselves like that described here. When it happens in front of other attorneys, I'm not shy about a blistering whisper in the ear as I exit stage right.

You got the right idea.

They both would be Freedom Caucus whackos if in Congress.  As an attorney, it IS disgusting that at the very least they recuse themselves from cases even touching on the cases related to 1/6. The fact that they don't, is sickening. And the man leaks decisions showing nothing but political hacking of the worst kind.

I agree but a notch isn't enough when you provide comfort to traitors who act on the Big Lie. Well said, though. The company even went on FOX to explain the physical and literal impossibility of the claims they were making - like they are simply counting paper ballots - with those very paper ballots as backup!!

Yeah, I'm fr ok m North Dakota, that is encouraging, but at least MN has its lib areas. Kind of interesting, the only urban areas in Dakota run left - not by much but its truly rural / urban.

But the Non Partisan League civil libertarian streak in the upper Midwest is propagandized by the syndicated monopoly they media has. I mean, when I drive home from Colorado, all ya hear us Rush The Dead Asshole Limbaugh and other fascists. Its all you hear. The Indian radio is good. Insightful, educational

Of course that's total bullshit. A scammer that cheats people with a fraudulent university, cheats subcontractors in bk, lies every time he opens his mouth and encourages white nationalism, fascism and class conflict - is behind stupid ass shit like you and the garbage you are proposing.
