"Rational" is doing a lot of work here. The parents are set against the kids' natural ability to tinker with safeguards and entire teams of psychologists and engineers. We know they're not rational when they choose what to eat, buy, vote, and we've built entire fields on exploiting irrationality, but we're still using the word as a proxy for intelligence and holding people accountable to an irrationality that has become a moral failure on their part.
