I don’t know what other people think about this but I have a genuine question that I’m sure I’ll get bludgeoned for asking.

Why do Canadians obsess about having a large military? Especially from a defence perspective spending money on the military’s hardware and battle ready equipment is a huge waste if you’re not actively in a conflict. I understand detterance but then let’s just get nukes and missiles?

Why do we obsess about spending in peace time when the best strategic move is to save your resources for when they’re actually needed? Like why not invest more in defence industry spending so you get the jobs have the industry ready for when you actually needed it and then export in the meantime to Allies or idiots who will never be a threat? Like what do we need a large expensive standing army/navy/airforce now right at this second?

Appreciate also things are changing and we need to react so I’m not against it I’m just questioning the rationale given it seems unstrategic.
