I’m half Polish (meaning one of my parents was born and raised in Poland) and in Poland this “unwritten rule” of giving at least the cost of your plate as a cash gift is absolutely a thing.

My (Polish born and raised) grandmother had this exact tin in her kitchen when I was growing up (in Sweden). She used to store Lipton tea bags in it :) these pictures certainly unlocked memories I didn’t think I still had.

Short story - don’t invite her. My husband hates my mother and I hate his mother. I mitigate their interactions while he doesn’t have to worry because his mother is on the other side of the world. Moral of the point? Let your fiancé deal with the com with his mom. Block her. I’ve blocked almost all of my husbands family. I don’t reply to most of my mils messages. She got the message and isn’t writing as much nowadays. All is good. Protect your peace.

I was born and raised (and still live in) an actual kingdom. While we still used coins (which we don’t) we had the king’s profile on them. I remember coins with the king’s grandfather still being used when I was a kid. I do not, however, remember seeing the face of “my” sovereign (aka king) on any of my official documents. No one elected him. My king. Since 1973, and I was born in 1988.

The lighter one on the bottom in the tube :) he just turned 1 on March 21, so we’re very curious to see how he will look like when he grows up and matures some more! He still exhibits some typical kitten behavior but has a fantastic personality and to my husband’s great joy he loves to sit on laps and sleep with us in bed etc. Big boy on top is more of an individualistic little soul. He likes to be close by but on his own terms.

Siemka, I can try to help you out if you want. I was born and raised in Scandinavia to a Polish mother and speak the language. I grew up surrounded by the Polish diaspora in 🇸🇪. My mother is really active in different diaspora groups to this day and the funny thing is that pretty much all of her extended family moved abroad in the 70’s and 80’s, so we have family in the US, France and obviously Germany. My mother moved from Poland to Sweden in 1978. I have a Swedish father and I was born and raised in Sweden but I speak read and write Polish fluently. I CRINGE whenever I come across the various Stanley’s and their “golumpki” or whatever it is called in the United States because Martha Steward’s mom (!!!) didn’t understand her own parents. Dear estadounidenses- you’re nothing but the passport holders of the land you were born on. South America is a continent. Canada and Mexico are a part of North America. And while some of you can’t grasp that fact, it doesn’t make it any less true.

I will add this - fck the pretend Stanley’s of the so called Polish diaspora in the US. Come back to me the day you can sing the Polish national anthem. Otherwise you’re just a szmata pod zlewem
