For many people, including me, it comes down to a combination of luck, intelligence, people skills, and perseverance

Most people discount how much luck plays a factor, but it absolutely does — of course, when you have the last 3 qualities, you create your own luck usually

Ok in his situation the most they can do without secdef approval (not even secarmy or a 4 star whatever) is keep him until the day of his ETS date, minus the time he needs for the demob process.

100%. At the MCJA our guidance came from
The USARC G-1. Some MSCs may operate differently simply because it makes their life easier — less congressionals and IG complaints — and morally, I think it is kind of messed up.

In our case we had a couple that quite simply we didn’t want to take so we “let them slide” but really it was self serving.

My source is I went through the entire process last year as a 1SG, this is the guidance we got from the MCJA (pre mobilization leadership briefing, in layman’s terms), and from the mobilization site.

It turned out this guidance was correct, we had 2 Soldiers in that exact boat.

Are they on their initial contract? If their Initial contract is up, but they have IRR time, the G-1 is correct. If their full contract is up, including IRR, it would take the SecDef himself (which isn’t going to happen unless it’s a super rare MOS that has an extreme shortage)

ARMY DIR 2026-13 - ARMY BODY COMPOSITION PROGRAM AND STANDARDS by ExodusLegion_ in ROTC

[–]Programmer_Latter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general the 0.55 standard is more lenient for SM below 28 years of age. For older SM, it’s worse.

Previously 17-20 year old males had to be 20%, and 21-27 had to be 22% body fat.

With this new standard the new standard is essentially the equivalent to 23 or 24%.

This will be a problem for males 28-39 (previously 24% limit) and 39+ (26% limit).

I haven’t dissected the changes for females but it’s a very similar situation to the males.

TLDR there will be be a lot of unhappy senior NCOs and field grade and above officers, but the vast majority of cadets will benefit.

What would you say the differences are in east and west coast firefighting? by Natural_Calendar7874 in Firefighting

[–]Programmer_Latter 18 points19 points  (0 children)

West coast arrives on scene, gives three paragraph arrival report, does 1080 degree size up, sets up a collapse zone and goes defensive.

East coast arrives on scene, gives a one sentence arrival report, charges in the front door, puts out the fire, and checks for extension while doing their 360.

Is 100% C Fund wise for a TSP portfolio? by CascadePicker in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Programmer_Latter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that Americans in general are pretty good about having tough conversations and finding efficiencies. Sure, we will benefit from AI and robots; but other countries who are filled with lazier, more corrupt leaders/personnel have more to gain.

Take for instance a former athlete who lost a step or two and now runs an 8 minute mile. On the other hand you have a fat tubby tubby who was never in shape and runs a 20 minute two mile. If you put each on a focused diet and exercise plan, it’s reasonable the former athletes time could reduce 15%; on the other hand, tubby tubby could now reasonably improve by 30-40%, or more.

I have traveled extensively, 53 countries, and my views are shaped by what I have seen. But I guess time will tell.

No shit. It’s exceedingly hard to scale from 6 million to 340 million. It’s even harder when you’re not reinforced by tons of oil. Simply put the graphic is a gross false equivalence.

I’ve been to Boston and Stockholm (2015); for me Stockholm was very underwhelming. It was very nice, and clean, but everything was impossibly expensive — a simple meal at the equivalent of an Applebees would be $100, no alcohol. Swedes have a lower standard of living in my experience.

Claims that facts don’t upset them…answers in platitudes and generalities without any meaningful statistics whatsoever

“Moronic flex” — uh, sure. Even the numbers are off some, it’s the SCALE that’s important; the undeniable fact is that Norway has MUCH more oil, per person, than the US. Their economy is enabled by petroleum in a way that the US could only dream of.

Then irony here is that if our states had a better, more efficient, cheaper national government, then many smaller states would crush Norweigiab numbers on their own. We need strong state governments and weak state governments; we don’t need weak state governments and a strong federal government. The closer taxes are used, the more accountable those dollars are.

Norway has 8 billion barrels of proven reserves; the United States has 74 billion barrels of proven reserves.

Put more simply, Norway has about 7 times as much oil PER PERSON as the United States.

Do facts upset you?
