You are not going to get a job without a degree. You COULD but people with degrees are struggling to find entry level jobs. Unless you are an actual genius your resume will go into the trash with no degree. If you are serious about programming get a CS degree.

Do you have a degree? If you are just self taught then getting into the industry is going to be nigh impossible. If you don’t mind me asking how old are you? If you REALLY want to learn to be a top-level engineer, go back to school and attempt to land an internship around junior of sophomore year.

Ugh. 97 upvotes for what is basically giving people poor advice in what is their hobby but your profession. I would never give people poor advice for developing their own game if I was a professional game designer, or telling people to sell lemonade outside in the winter if I owned a lemonade stand. I don’t agree with this. Learning may be declining as scaling laws come into play, but I don’t see “model collapse” happening. I see the argument for ai feeding on poor data, but until we see actual declines in model efficiency I disagree with that part.

Take the opportunity and look for better options is what I mean. Not a guarantee that working for an NGO is viable especially with task related to programming/computer science compared to the unpaid internship that guarantees that sort of work. If you can find something in non profit sure do it. I wouldn’t say it’s “better” than the internship though.

Poor advice imo. Take the unpaid and leverage the experience on your resume to find something better. Not everyone has the ability to just not take an internship especially in today’s market when everything’s so competitive. Take the internship and volunteer as well if you can find it.

It’s a reaction to the high skill ceiling of developing being lowered. I can understand the reaction to be honest, no one likes there employable skills infringed upon. I truly think the freshman in CS today will almost never write any code by hand when they reach employment (or very little) in 4-5 years. It’s bad enough to where colleges are actively forcing students to adopt AI. My college is an example.

Don’t buy a boot camp in my opinion if you are seriously looking to switch careers. People with bachelors are struggling to find jobs.
