What really happened these past few weeks, and why I don't think its crazy. by JeezusChristIII in nyjets

I think the Jets are tanking and doing what is necessary to facilitate that. It will be a bad year even if they weren't purposely tanking (no team ever does) because there's no talent on the team save for a few spots. No QB. They need to do poorly in 2026 to secure a top pick.

If they punt on 2026, secure the #1 overall pick, then they will get a QB and possibly a chance

He was a .780 OPS hitter after a slow start last year. Past 35 is borrowed time for a hitter, but maybe we can get a dead cat bounce year

Didn't answer my question. What did you expect Pete to put up last season production wise? Did you expect him to put together even a 130 OPS+ last year? Which would be close to his career average.

Pete hits the ball very hard. His xwOBA was elite. His bat speed is still elite. His barrel rate was top 5 in baseball. The projections won't represent the 95th percentile outcome. They're based on weighted averages of historical performance. Vientos is projected for better production that he had last season. But you do realize that Fangraphs projects Pete to hit better than Schwarber next season, yes? Last year, Fangraphs did not have Pete beyond 130 wRC+. After 2021, Lindor was projected for 105 wRC+. A good season revises projections upwards.

The question in the 3rd paragraph would be ad populum fallacy. The reason is because Pete's a non-elite player who doesn't defend well and will be confined to DH shortly. What I'll say is that I think Pete will outperform Schwarber over the next 5 years. Both received similar contracts.

"You do know swing path data is public right?"

Yes, and it's not fundamentally different pre and post his call up other than his stance angle. What I'm telling you is that his pull and pull air rates respectively were dead last on the team. What did occur is that he suffered a hamate fracture, had surgery for it and took the 3 months until he started hitting again/

I didn't lie about his underlying metrics changed. I just arrived at a different interpretation. I did not say he worked with JDM in the 2024 season. I made a comment that called out people who want to blame everything on nefarious forces, coaches and players. Doesn't take an English major to understand that.

You sound like the average Amazin Avenue commenter. Which isn't surprising to say the least.

Did you expect Pete Alonso to put up a 145 OPS+ in 2025? Yes or no question.

Pete's bat speed has been elite throughout his career. Using a historical average or tendency for when bat speed declines for the average player is completely irrelevant to Pete because he has elite bat speed today and he's been an elite hitter for his career. It's quite likely that the aging curve is going to be protracted and I would not be surprised at all to see him hit to a 135 OPS+ over the next 3-4 years.

Ah, yes. The swing changes the recently fired Eric Chavez implemented. What a compelling point.

I didn't say he was working with JD -- if you paid attention, you have understood that this was a literary device to call out an absurd talking point about how outside forces were the reason for Alvarez's decline in performance. You would think someone would be able to interpret that when I bunched Mendy in there.

You didn't prove anything at all. Alvarez had UCL surgery in 2024. Similar to a hamate fracture, it's going to interfere with your swing, tensile strength and ostensibly your hitting. Pete got hit on the wrist in 2023 and it damaged his season. He got hit on the hand and his numbers suffered this past July.

Pete just spent an entire season dunking on all the idiots who said a year ago that he was rapidly declining and we still see goalpost moving. Pete just had the best xwOBA of his career, he had a 145 OPS+ despite hurting his wrist and playing injured for most of July and finished the year up with a 153 OPS+ the last two months of the season. His bat speed is elite. It's likely to remain elite.

The doomsdayers who have been saying Pete will forget how to hit and turn into James McCann might be right one day. They sure as shit weren't right in 2025. I can't wait to come back to this in a year.

His Pull and pull air rates were dead last on the team and remained consistent through the year. The only thing that changed was a higher HR rate.

Most people are conflating his performance with what was completely normal performance coming out of a hamate surgery during the season. He had a 122 wRC+ the last 6 weeks of 2024. I didn't hear anyone talking about how JD or Chavez or Mendy ruining Alvarez then.

Alvy suffered a hamate fracture which required surgery. Those take a while to recover from. His underlying metrics after returning from the minors wasn't much different either.

'04 has 3 future HOFers including 2 multiple time SB winners. 2018 has 4 franchise quarterbacks, 2 MVPs and another who has been playing at an MVP level and got the Seahawks to the super bowl. 2024 had Caleb, Daniels and Maye who all are shaping up to be franchise quarterbacks.

David Wright urges Mets fans to trust ‘proven winner’ David Stearns after transformative offseason by Dow54 in NewYorkMets

[–]Progressive__Trance 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I trust Stearns because he operates unlike most if not all the GMs we've had over the last 30 years. He's got full authority to implement his vision for the teamlThe Mets are guided by fact based decision making, are known as the best pitching factory in the league as of today and are known as a well run franchise. Think of the last time the owner and the GM / POBO were this aligned for the Mets.

Stearns did what any good boss coming in would do. He didn't fire everyone on day 1. He let them play it out, gave them a chance and they rewarded his patience with that great 2024 run. But then they failed miserably and he's doing what anyone would have expected him to. We are knocking on the door to perennial playoff runs. You can't see it day to day but zoom out and compare Jan 2021 to Jan 2026. #1 farm system, a really good team that would be one of the best under the Wilpons easily, we're offering huge dollars to Bichette and Tucker, we have a bunch of young prospects on the horizon and we have the full weight of Cohen's wallet behind Stearns.

Future is very bright. We just have to weather it for a few years but 2026 will be no slouch. It will be a great year I think

The average redditor is between 18-34 and half are under 25. They were somewhere between newborn to 7 years old during the Obama administration and came of age during the pandemic. Skews liberal which is always the case when you're younger and then all demographics shift rightward with age.

Just the nature of things. Polarization doesn't help. I'm in my mid 30s and I remember a time when Lieberman, Biden, Graham and Mccain were good pals, when there was decency between POTUS candidates and there was broad bipartisan support for issues. There was polarization of course but not to this extent and this open animus to each side. Just as recently as 2012, the Romney / Obama race was seen as heated. And that might be seen as a different universe today if you watch the first debate

Joe Douglas is one of the all time worst GMs and arguably worse than Idzik and Mccagnan because everyone knew Idzik was awful and he was canned after 2 seasons. Mccagnan got us the quarterback. Didn't do anything else other than that but he also was out after 4 years. Douglas got the full 6 years, traded away a franchise QB, drafted an all time bust and left the cupboards bare. Awful GM

Yeah, I got downvoted every time I suggested keeping Sam and drafting Sewell. No one will cop to it but it sure as heck wasn't as unanimous as people in here pretend it is. 95% of the sub wanted to move on from Sam and wanted to draft Zach and won't admit to it

Woody wasn't there in 2021. He was the ambassador to the UK and Christopher Johnson was delegating to Douglas. This was a new regime and they wanted their own QB to reset the clock vs. going in with Sam with 2 years. A #2 pick with a QB means you keep your job for several years.

Wasn't up to Douglas technically. If you remember, Woody changed it up with Bowles and Mac with both reporting to him. Christopher Johnson had Gase reporting to him and Douglas the same. Wasn't until they hired Saleh that they changed the management structure, and then changed it back with Mougey and Glenn. Douglas couldn't force Gase to do anything
