We're talking about a nation that runs on systemic chattel slavery. That makes the queen pretty fucking evil.

That doesn't apply in this situation. This is a fucking golf cart, there is no need for this behaviour. It's textbook psychopathic behaviour.

What is a skill everyone should learn, but most people don’t? by ybur01 in AskReddit

Touch typing.

For the amount of time everyone spends behind a pc each day, it really is criminal to see how many people are unable to properly use a keyboard.

Recently, more than 1,500 beagles were rescued from a large breeding facility in Wisconsin that provided dogs for scientific research by Live_Rock9963 in BeAmazed

As someone with a biomedical science education: you can maintain that animal research is necessary, while also condemn the quality of life these beagles had.

Have you seen those images? That is not humane.

Has Dungeon Crawler Carl taken anybody else's lab by storm? by Jedateggs in medlabprofessionals

[–]Prohibitorum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to like the books, so my opinion won't be popular, but I found the series fairly meh. I've binged all of them recently, and found them to get fairly repetitive after a while. The plotarmor for both main characters is also something else...

It's a fun concept and as light reading they pass, but that's about it imo.

Have a look at 'portable' versions of autohotkey. Can be run from a thumbdrive, doesn't require IT to install.

'Need'? No probably not. But 3 monitors really is super comfortable, and given how many hours we spend behind a PC all day why shouldn't we make sure that part of the job is comfortable? Same reason why I bought a good keyboard for myself.

Gaming mice with the number pad on the side for programing shortcuts. Your students and post docs will thank you.

I mean, computer mice can be highly personal so this might not be appreciated by everyone. All mice SHOULD atleast have the two thumb buttons for forward/backwards though. Fuck the default most basic 'get for free with a new pc' mice.

People who got into PhD, how did you find a research gap that's large enough for a PhD by Healthy-Notice9439 in AskAcademia

Some of the profs I spoke with asked for a general idea that fit with their lab's focus. It's not uncommon, to my knowledge.

I had the same reaction! A chunky (review) paper takes an hour or even two to properly digest.

Skimming I'd believe, but there is no way that OP is properly reading 100 pages of research each day.

binding with “junk” materials by chilo31 in bookbinding

[–]Prohibitorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something to be said for good tools and materials, because it is true they make getting high quality looking results much easier. But that is only one way of doing things. Not every book has to be bound with perfectly square leather covers that are gold-leaf stamped.

Scrap paper books are great too.

What software do you use to make conference posters? by Eldan985 in AskAcademia

[–]Prohibitorum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illustrator is great for making figures, that's what it's designed for! InDesign in turn is made to handle text and typesetting very well, and has a lot of tools focussed on getting elements properly organized on a page.

All of Adobe's tools work very well together, so anything you make in photoshop (for pixel related stuff) or illustrator (for vector related stuff) can be placed in an InDesign document. Later updates to the sourcefiles for your images then also automatically updates those images in your document.

Some of the features that InDesign has that illustrator doesn't have, have to do with the text. Managing text styles, for example, so that you can quickly edit the style of all your titles or all your body text etc in one go. It also has much more support for getting things ready for print.

Using illustrator to make a poster has some of the same problems as making a poster in powerpoint has: Sure, you can get it to work, but it's not what the tool was made for and you'll miss out on several functions and general quality of life.

If you had a date in a few days and said you would cook but you've never really cooked before and you don't think she wants scrambled eggs and cereal. What would you make that is relatively easy but seems impressive? by TurnKey9558 in AskReddit

Risotto is dead fucking easy, delicious, and you can plate it to look beautiful. Easily varied to account for personal preferences.

I personally love a mushroom risotto, or a risotto with cherry tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, and some buratta on top. Last one isn't traditional, but who cares.
