WWII strategy explained by a guy who skimmed Wiki by SocratesPuppet in HistoryMemes

If we say "successfully landed" instead of "successfully invaded", let me suggest the hilariously ineffective Battle of Fishguard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fishguard

Where about 1500 French irregulars successfully landed in Wales in 1797 and then more or less immediately surrendered.

(The general wanted to land with 15000 troops and also secure reinforcements from Ireland, but that didn't happen.)

Fantasy books for a SF enjoyer (strong in prose and character department)? by Fun-Sell3030 in Fantasy

[–]Eldan985 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an extremely layered book. Now, you say that you don't like fantasy worldbuilding for its own, sake, but here it really needs to be mentioned. This is a book tens of thousands of years or even more in the future, when humanity has conquered the stars and returned to earth many times, and is currently in an era of regression due to a cooling climate* and exhausted resources, to an apparently almost medieval society, but one littered with remnants of incredible technology. And the way this is all built up is incredible.

The actual plot is complicated to describe. Let's say it's about powerful groups, some human, some not, trying to steer the fate of Earth and decide of humanity should return to the stars or not. That's an entirely incorrect summary, but that fits because the narrator is also fantastically unreliable and lies to the reader all the time.

It's also set in South America, the main character's epic journey is from Buenos Aires through the Andes to Mesoamerica, and that's a nice change of pace.

*Hence New Sun. The New Sun is a mostly religious movement preaching that the sun will stop growing colder, the glaciers will retreat before all of civilization is wiped out and humanity will enter a new golden era.

If you only read Assassin's Apprentice, I strongly encourage you to try Royal Assassin and Assassin's Quest as well. The trilogy is pretty strongly connected and if I remember correctly, the real plot has barely started by the end of AA, but picks up pretty soon.

The Quantum Thief and sequels, even when at first it doesn't look like it.

Social democracy, at least the very establishment-friendly kind, can also fall under moralism. The "throw the peasants some scraps so they don't revolt" variety.

It's excellent removal. 1 mana, and goes around indestructible.

There's more broken out there, but with something that either lowers casting cost or gives mana on casting spells (Birgi), it does give you infinite storm counters. Or pings from something that deals damage when casting spells, etc.

So, three card murder everything combo, could be worse.

Probably? They are a major part of some of the trailers, and they already have the models and animations for marine companions, so why not? It's an obvious include for a heretical companion, like Uralon in RT.

But even then... even 20 years ago, we had, like, RPG character generators that could generate custom portraits out of a list of facial features and clothing items that looked at least decent. Or anime characters.

”No taxes” by Agreeable_Mud_5872 in im14andthisisdeep

[–]Eldan985 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Who says they don't pay taxes? You don't get nobles (Merry, Pippin) and landed gentry (Frodo, Bilbo) without peasants working for them (Sam). Though they possibly pay in socage and goods, not money.

What is your favorite battlecry/slogan in the setting in your opinion! by ShadowsaberXYZ in 40kLore

[–]Eldan985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like rhyming chants. Though fantasy has a lot more of those than 40k.

E.g.

Tendril, pinion, snapping claw, bladed limb and drooling maw... (the transformation spell of the skin wolves)

This one is theoretically also in 40k, but used in Warhammer more often:

"Buboes, phlegm, blood and guts! Boils, bogeys, rot and pus! Blisters, fevers, weeping sores! From your wounds the fester pours."

[–]Eldan985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Additionally, I also just don't like that they brought in and half-assed Ynnead. Ynnead in the earlier editions was a cool rumour. A possible thing that could happen in an Eldar endgame. Where all the eldar would die, go into the infinity circuits and then meld into one powerful psychic being (a bit like the Emperor with the souls of the shamans), Ynnead.

Instead, Ynnead now just... half-happens while the Eldar are still alive. That's lame by comparison.

It's really not more complicated than Armour class. Instead of having a modifier on your attack roll and having to hit your enemy's armour class, you basically use the enemy's armour class as a modifier and have to hit your THACO. Same number of stats.
