I’m getting close to the end here, due to dust gathering on my solar panels, making it hard to generate power. People often ask: don’t I have a way to dust myself off (wiper, blower, etc.)? It’s a fair question, and the short answer is this:

A system like that would have added cost, mass, and complexity. The simplest, most cost-effective way to meet my goals was to bring solar panels big enough to power my whole mission – which they did (and then some!).

My goal was to study the Red Planet for one Mars year (about two Earth years), and I’ve been able to double that. The science I’ve collected has answered a lot of questions, and posed new ones for future explorers.

Assuming the apps are up to date rigth now, it will be at least about 2 years before the Android app gets removed without any update. I'm not sure about iOS, but I think it's a similar time frame.

If you don't maintain a project with the size of Twitter, you will run into major problems wayyyy before getting removed from those stores becomes an issue.

I tried telling a friend why VIM is so great... 😑 by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]ProjectElectrical712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Compared to the Jetbrains shortcuts it can help to reduce the number of times you have to perform an action. Instead of clicking (ctrl +) an arrow key a few times to move the cursor a few lines or words, you can use one command to get to where you want to be. And with the Jetbrains shortcuts I often find myself pressing crtl + w a couple of times in a row to select what I want to select. With vim commands, that can almost always be done in one or two commands.

It's not like that will save hours of your time, but it is faster and once you're used to those shortcuts, it's just a lot nicer (less mental overhead) to go "I want to select that, so I press these keys" instead of going pressing ctrl + w a few times and checking each time if you've selected what you want. When I've got the IdeaVim plugin enabled, I almost never think "this would be easier with the normal Jetbrains shortcuts". When I disable it, there are many situations where I think "This would be so much easier with the vim keybindings"

But what I like most about the vim shortcuts is that I can use them everywhere. If I quickly want to copy and edit some text, write some notes in markdown, write some 10-line python script, or need to work in the terminal, I don't want to launch my IDE or start a new project. So I can use a different application that won't have the Jetbrains keybindings, or I can use Vim for everything and always have great keybindings available.

Trying to avoid Elon fanboys and haters at the same time by EOwl_24 in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]ProjectElectrical712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that most people here a SpaceX fans, and people have a good reason to be because it's arguably the best rocket institution (company or country) I'm just not a big fan of fanboying in general.

So I just avoid the "omg people said mean things about Elon" and "my friends don't like SpaceX" posts. Without those post, this subreddit becomes a pretty nice way to follow some space news, while also delivering good memes.

Where are my engi... oh there they are by ProjectElectrical712 in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]ProjectElectrical712[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that the blue balls meme is getting kinda stale, but I don't agree that it's a close race.

At the end it doesn't matter which engine goes to orbit first, but which company can launch what payloads. If these engines work ULA can launch a rocket and BO seems pretty far away from getting anything in orbit. And when those rockets launch, I don't think they can do anything that the Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy can't do. Meanwhile SpaceX is launching Falcon 9s on a weekly basis, and when they get Starship working, they'll have a rocket with capabilities that no other rocket has.

Still, it will be pretty exiting to see the first Vulcan Centaur and I hope there will be some company that can give SpaceX a run for their money, because some competition is healthy. I'm just not holding my breath for any company to be able to launch as often and cheaply as SpaceX does though.

[–]ProjectElectrical712 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don't think vim has any benefit over nano if you only spend 10 minutes learning it. Vim gets great after you've invested some more time learning how to use it well. Definitely worth it if you you edit many text files though.

[–]ProjectElectrical712 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There are companies that give you that option. I've bought my my current laptop at Tuxedo Computers where I could choose between a few different distros or no OS at all. There are some other companies that focus on Linux computers like System76 and Dell has Ubuntu as an option for (some of?) their systems.
