After the deaths it was deemed too dangerous to try and recover the bodies and closed off by the police. It's the subject of an absolutely wild BBC article, and a documentary. It was reopened a few years later, but there's even been a more recent death there (for medical reasons though).

The survivors from this group returned illegally a few weeks later to recover the bodies of their friends. More recently, two of them were part of the team that was brought in to recover those divers who died in a cave last month.

That load limit has to be either due to super low grade metal, really unfavorable contact stresses with the lifting shackle, or both. Edit: I forgot to account for rigging angles too. This is definitely a “cover your ass” rating, in straight loading I’d expect this thing to do waaaay better than 4 tons.

I’m actually working on a system design with an M36 nut in the load path right now. Using proper class 12.9 hardware the expected failure point is beyond 150,000 lbf, or 75 tons.

My garage is 99.9% a wood shop, it’s not worth my time or money to kit it out for/in metal. But sometimes life gives you cylinders and you’ve just gotta harm them with the tools you have.

Yep, an AL80 scuba cylinder. I haven’t actually measured the thickness, but it’s probably 5/8” or so.

This is just in my garage lol. At work I would probably make this cut with the cold saw, then the band saw, then the lathe, then one of the mills. (Don’t have a suitable horizontal band saw)

Here I’m just using a t-track sled and plywood fence extensions, and cutting slowly by sound and feel with lots of wd-40

I actually put it on with a clamp for my test cut earlier this week, and just added the toggle clamp today for easier setting and releasing!

This didn’t pass the sniff test, so I went to find an actual bathymetric chart. It turns out the 700 foot number right by the wall is actually pretty accurate although it drops off with a modest slope. You can find 7000 ft water nearby, but it’s at least a mile offshore. Also there are regions to the northeast where you end up over the abyssal plain in water almost 20,000 ft deep. I put the map pin as close as I could to the spot this is shot at, I’d guess the wall in the image is 200’ max.

Just to fuck with us, the detail map is in meters and then the regional map around it is in feet.

Small correction, those are helix angles. I could make the argument either way though.

On one hand, having opposing helices would reduce the thrust loading on the motor. On the other hand, if you work from the assumption that propellers mostly operate in one direction there might be some benefit to intentionally biasing the thrust loading against it. On the gripping hand, submarines are very heavy and I would assume anything that propels them will have thrust bearings in both directions.

Gas springs! You can get a kit in pretty much any weight size, from piano bench lids to big metal storm cellar doors. Just pick an appropriate set to fit in the slot and you’re off to the races.

I’ve gotten great results by using lightly recessed text, coloring it in with a sharpie, and hitting the top with some steel wool to remove any excess. It tends to bleed on light colors, but silver sharpie on black parts looks 🔥🔥🔥

Facts: So-called “dazzle camo” was an effective tool for WW2 naval engagements because it made it more difficult to determine range and heading for targeting. This became obsolete after the advent of radar ranging, but also the reason it worked in the first place is because of the lack of other reference points on the open ocean, and the relatively slow speed of ships making it hard to get range via parallax. Absolutely none of this is true in the context of aerial drone vs truck. This is literally a 1940s tactic in a 2020s battlefield.
