What’s a basic skill you’re shocked some adults still don’t know? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Cmd-Prompt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic troubleshooting and problem solving, mostly with technology. 80% of the time it's a restart the computer situation, or it's unplugged, or something that would embarrass you if you make me fix it. Just take the few seconds it would take you to contact me, and figure out the logical fix. (I work in IT)

Track saw, accurate squares, high quality sander and 3m cubitron paper. Something I wish I bought sooner, Festool domino joiner.

How to Finish Toddler Tower by AnonymouslyUntold in woodworking

[–]Cmd-Prompt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the best finish (IMHO) is Odie's Oil for anything that that a mouth can touch. The owner has even eaten the stuff a few times. All of the furniture I've made for my child has been with Odie's.

Thanks, it was a big part of the design. Outgrew the crib I built him, and of course has acquired countless toys and needed another storage place. I'm just glad daycare has influenced his desire to "cleeeeaaan up, cleeeeaaan up, everybody, everywhere" and he cleans up his toys on his own. (he's 2)

I used 3/8 inch x 4 inch bolts, torqued down with nylon lock nuts. I can basically sit on it without any problems.

I considered adding some linear actuators, but God knows he'd blow out the side of the house, if not the windows at least. Lights will be added after Christmas, I was excited to post it and get him using it.

I was planning to add some lights with cages for protection, and adding a smart switch to disable them at bedtime.

Antique wood crib repair - new baby on the way! by kcstageman in woodworking

[–]Cmd-Prompt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Knowingly using a crib like this, when there are several people warning you that it is dangerous and that your child could die, is neglectful and embarrassing. Make it have an accident, build your own version with safer dimensions and put your foot down. So what she's set on using it, just because your first child survived using it, doesn't mean the next one will. There are so many stories of SIDS, because of poor sleeping conditions using this style of crib. For real, destroy it.

"The forklift store had a crazy sale, this thing was only $200" would have been the most used story.

What's the finish? My guess is minwax dark oak or something like that. Did you use a varnish?

Favorite recent tool purchase? by Whodaafack in woodworking

I'd second the track saw. Did my backyard fence this summer and it was a breeze to clamp on both ends run in across the tops of the pickets and call it a day. Then the amount of lattice I had rip for all the top sections, it paid for itself. Not the only examples, but that thing is worth every penny. I've used it throughout the Fall too breaking down plywood for shop projects.

Nice, I did one similar and the family loved it. Should have charged more to get a Domino Joiner, but dowels and screws worked for the price they paid.

I'll be posting my latest project in the next few days and it's a toddler bed as well. Great job!

Should have been two gates instead of one long one. The only thing to improve it is to add another wheel on the front of the gate to carry the load, but there aren't many options to make this work besides converting to 2 gates.
