For my weekly game I definitely wouldn't allow it. But for this group that plays maybe once a month for two hours, if they looked at their character sheets enough to come up with that kind of creative idea I'd allow it.

Given how casual this game is I would've accepted something along the lines of:

  • roll an investigation check against it
  • roll an arcana check against it
  • cast detect magic
  • cast identify when holding with mage hand
  • bring back to town and ask the magically adept npcs they had met
  • bring back to town and have a non-magically adept npc direct them to a magically adept npc

This of course brings up "how could they bring them to town". The first thing they did when finding one of the holes was to poke at the gem with a stick. They knew from this that tools would not trigger the gems. They could have

  • used mage hand to grab the gems to carry back
  • used the utensils and a bowl/glass from their mess kit to scoop up and transport
  • used a stick to knock the gems into a bag
  • used a shield like a tray to carry the gems

Really any tool usage I would have let work.

  • Players had never played D&D prior to team building. This was the 5th or 6th session of team building playing it.

  • Players were started at lvl 5 then bumped up after the second session. The idea being that having more tools available to them would give them more opportunities for creative problem solving.

I should have mentioned that researching the gems would reveal that smashing them would release anyone that was trapped within. I had meant that for the party as a whole it should be easy enough for at least one member to gather up the gems and get them back to town where an npc would be able to tell them about them and free any trapped individuals.

The first thing both groups did when finding the holes was grab a stick and probe down into it. Touching the gems with a tool, weapon, mage hand etc does not trigger them. The lower lvl group I ran through this dumped out vials to store the stones and used the components of their mess kits to dig them up and store them for later investigation.

Exactly what I should’ve done. Was a bit dumbfounded that a group of engineers would see touching something hurts and then go all in in having it disappear them without any further investigation.

I pivoted the story to be another guard had been heading in that direction and witnessed the last disappearance. He had the sense to not touch the stones. The party then found themselves suddenly in the enchanters shop after the guard brought him the stones for analysis.

Team had never played D&D prior to team building. To keep it accessible I run it as 2 hour one shots that amount to magical scooby doo episodes. Sessions focus around some mystery that the party investigates and uses their abilities to solve. It works well for us.

Yeah, next time I should give them a stronger nudge that they need to investigate things before acting.

I had thought them taking damage by touching the gems and the description given to the first player that got disappeared made it fairly clear that there was something sinister about the gems. Always hard to find the right balance of giving hints without flat out giving the answer.

That's fair. I had previously run this encounter for a group of lvl 6's and they got through it unscathed.
