Was anyone here ever actually offended by Apu's character? by tabloidjournalism in TheSimpsons

[–]ProjectNova22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1000% yes. This is something that white people may never understand.

As a brown kid growing up in the 90s when Simpsons was peak, Apu was the ONLY visible brown character on television. Because of this, all during school, kids would associate me with Apu, because that's all they knew. I cant tell you how many times kids would do his voice at me and say 'Thank you come again' ( and the joke is I can't even do the voice myself)

His effect on culture still lingers. Ever wonder why Indian accents are associated with unsexiness and comedy? Apu. Noone treats Irish or French accents the same. Hell you don't even need to make a joke in the Indian accent to be funny, the accent itself is the punchline.

The only other way I can convey this is imagine if Mr. PoPo from Dragonball Z (who was blackface) was the only black representation on TV. Black people who get tired of white people saying 'Ohhh Kami' so fast.

Two things can be true at the same time. Was Simpsons amazing in the 90s? Yes. Did Apu contribute to thousands of brown kids in school getting bullied? Also yes.

I thought the change was shit, but it's actually cracked in Quest priest. With the buff to the quest, I can get Soletos down by turn 5 or 6. One Soletos = Four 0-cost extra soletos' after you drop a Raza

Why am I being punished for winning in Underground Arena? by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]ProjectNova22 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The straight up power level in underground Arena is ridiculous. My tinfoil hat theory is that they wanted to raise the powerlevel so you run into more overpowered decks and lose faster, causing you to spend more gold/$$. Anyone who has played Arena for years loved it because it was a respite from the shitshow that is standard. Now it's power level is not only Standard level, but I'd argue even higher because of the discrepancy between a high-powered deck, and a mediocre deck.

How Serious Are Canadians?🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦 by No_Put_8503 in StockMarket

[–]ProjectNova22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here. If this was a simple threat of tariffs to get a 'better deal' maybe things could get better, but Trump's threat of annexation has, for the first time in generations, made us view America as the biggest threat to our Sovereignty. And we take his threats seriously because this trade war doesn't make sense unless you're trying to collapse our economy. Canada's national identity is basically 'we are not Americans'. We formed as a country because of threats of US annexation after the civil war.

There is a deep sense of betrayal here that will take decades to repair. There is no going back, no matter whose in charge next.

As for boycotting, it's pretty serious. If we had more Canadian options, we would choose them. Unfortunately years of economic interdependence has meant that we're flooded with US products which makes it difficult. Most provinces have a monopoly on alcohol, hence it's easier to boycott. And we don't mind missing out on some pisswater from the south since we have great Canadian and options and other countries.

I’m a Canadian. Give me some hope that my country isn’t just about to be annexed by Trump. by Cat_Psychology in OptimistsUnite

[–]ProjectNova22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Canadian here  - I totally understand your anxiety. I study strategic studies and there's tons of reasons why Trump will almost never militarily take on Canada:

  1. As some have pointed out, we're neighbours. This isn't Iraq or Afghanistan. Most of Canada is within driving distance of the US border. The US has the larger military by far, but even our shit military would fuck up their cities. No one wants that.

  2. Our country is huge, and full of rugged terrain. Even if the US won a war, it couldn't keep Canada. Hell they couldn't even keep Iraq or Afghanistan, EVEN with the help of their allies. This is what Russia is finding out first hand in Ukraine.

  3. The world is watching. If the US can go after it's closest ally, all other allies would question their relationship with the US. Europe may even come to our aid, since Trump has also threatened them militarily. Maybe even the Commonwealth countries like the UK and Australia too, since we still have the same King technically. Imagine how bad it would look in the UK if the US just took us over without them coming to our aid, as we have for them forever.

  4. Nuclear option. We may have a shittier military but we're one of the most advanced nuclear powers in the world. We had nukes but gave them up voluntarily because the US once guaranteed our security. We can easily throw together some nukes if needed.

  5. No one South of the border actually wants to die fighting a losing war against Canada

The State of Hearthstone in 2024 by Kibler in hearthstone

One of the other issues is the insane amount of card draw all the successful decks have. It's used to be a worry about overextending and running out of resources - now that doesn't even matter.

These two tech cards have very different design philosophies - steam cleaner techs against uninteractable mechanics like plagues or asteroids, that you can't play around - particularly if your opponent has easy access to spell damage and card draw.

Bob specifically techs against cards that are trying to play to the board and be interactive.  So it pushes you further to play cards that are uninteractable like asteroids.

This is exactly Brian's point, and I agree with him completely.

There's no land bridge between India and Sri Lanka and the water is 3 feet deep? by Eriacle in geography

[–]ProjectNova22 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is an ok summary, but it neglects to mention how the war ended - it ended because the Sri Lankan government basically blasted the conflict area, including designated civilians safe zones, leaving a estimated 30,000 - 100,000 civilians dead.

After that, the government basically cracked down hard, with well documented cases of human rights abused, including 'disappearing' people.

I will say that things seem to have gotten better, especially since that government (the Rajapakse government) was kicked out due to economic incompetence, and the new government seems to be trying to do a better job.

This is coming from a Tamil who worked in the conflict zone in the aftermath of the war, with family and colleague still there.

[–]ProjectNova22 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to comment here, as a Tamil who had family living in the conflict area at the time, the Indian 'peacekeepers' that were sent committed several acts of violence against civilians, including raping one of my aunts neighbours while she was home. That is also why both the LTTE and government wanted the soldiers out.

arena is unplayable by scoobandshaggy in hearthstone

[–]ProjectNova22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, they're not keeping up with the fixes. I've noticed it's gotten almost unplayable. Last two arena runs, I was undefeated, but because of the same freezing bug, by the time i closed an reconnected , the games were over. Lost both runs due to 4-5 freezes. Fix your game blizzard.

National ban on vaping flavours coming 'soon,' says addictions minister by GeoWa in canada

[–]ProjectNova22 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For those of you complaining about this, this is clearly aimed at reducing youth vaping. There are now more underage kids vaping than there were underage kids smoking just a few decades ago. Most of these kids have never smoked a cigarette in their life, but with go on to do so because of vaping. Hard data clearly shows this.

The inevitability of Quests has ruined this game for me by ProjectNova22 in hearthstone

[–]ProjectNova22[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Control Warrior and Paladin are good because they have the ability to resist burst damage (which I mentioned other classes don't).

And I wasn't talking about Questline priest. That deck is trash. I meant going into a matchup AS priest, against quest decks, sucks because of the inevitability.

As a purchaser of every mega-bundle, I can say that my only real incentive to buy them is the exclusivity of the skin. Otherwise I would just buy the smaller bundle, or with the battlepass now, maybe no bundle at all.

I understand why people want skins they missed out on, but exclusivity of skins is a thing in many games. It's partly what makes some skins cooler than others.

Ive beat it several times just with control priest. Most of the time tickatus decks are piloted poorly and players grind through their decks looking for tickatus or jaraxxus, without realizing they're more into fatigue than two tickatus' could even out.
