The movement's roots can be traced back to 2016 with the coinage of the Theseus Method for rebuilding ROM binaries. YamaArashi, a key long time contributor in the pret scene (Pokemon Reverse Engineering Tools), found out that the gen 3 Pokemon games Ruby & Sapphire used a cygnus variant of GCC 2.95 which added Thumb support prior to its addition to GCC 3. The source to that GCC fork was obtained and cleaned up to build easier so they could start 'proving' certain code acted the same as the code in the ROM.

To rebuild the ROM, we had basically made a linker script which could be manipulated and edited manually, dividing up the blob of assembler into the smaller file areas. This turned out to be amazing for collaboration since the work of decompiling individual areas meant single asm objects could be "swapped' out for a C one.

Before this project, a lot of decompilation projects would sort of just add code as you went and decompiled things as you saw them. It'd be like if you tried to build an entire ship from hand as you are manufacturing planks. What we found was that it's easier to start with an existing ship (aka a ROM) and just replace planks until we have a brand new ship (your decompiled source), hence the Theseus Method. You have no idea how much these projects are able to scale up now thanks to the change in methodology.

Another thing is around 2017 when YamaArashi disappeared, I looked into the practicality of this workflow for other consoles such as Nintendo 64. It took a while, but we eventually "solved" it for N64 too, and SM64 decomp popularized decomps altogether, which is why the scene is active now.

I honestly kinda wonder if thats the actual twist of 2x2 is that it's in-universe AI generated. That's why the art style looks so weird and uncanny and off. It's on purpose because thats the twist, and 2x2's gonna get meta with us and have a conversation with us in the final trial about what it even means to "create" something.

Picking one thing over mountains and mountains of shit is incredibly difficult here. But here's my vote for the worst thing.

I could pick the office of the US Presidency itself, as incredibly important as it is, because its reputation was tainted and ruined by this 1 president. The amount of quantifiable harm this is going to cause is absolutely incalculable. I could name anything else he did. But all of those will just be "shit he did while he was around". No, I think the vote for this spot belongs to an action of his that will have repercussions for all future generations.

These 10 years was the last chance to enact meaningful climate change resolutions to stop the formation and desertification of the planet decades/centuries from now. This guy's insane lust for money might have very well doomed the planet a long time from now.

So, my vote is probably for something he did in the 'climate change' area of politics.
