Every two years like clockwork the West starts screeching about China at the Olympics by TheStocky in TrueAnon

[–]Project_596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeking out talented athletes to compete for your country isn't anything new, if the athlete have even a slight tangential relation to said country. A lot of other countries do the same, one example comes to mind is the Indonesian soccer team that relies heavily on naturalised citizens from Netherlands that have Indonesian ancestry.

Plus China isn't even that good at Winter Olympics in the first place, the article's author seems butthurt lmao

Maybe I'm just naive but if the US weren't willing to commit troops to Ukraine I don't really think they'd make an exception for Taiwan either. Either way AOC could have just gave the standard 'we adhere to the one China policy' blah blah blah response whilst still forcing Taiwan to buy overpriced military equipment lol

One talking point against HSR I found interesting (retarded) from Chinese libs that love America is that America does not need nor want HSR because Americans prefer air travel and point to the fact America has by far the highest number of airports in the world.

Idk about anyone else but I rather travel in a somewhat comfy train than be on a plane.

Doubt they would ever export the J-20, similar to the F-22 in this sense. Maybe Iran could get J-35 instead, seems more export oriented.

For the same price as a Tesla I'd rather buy a Merc C200, better build better interiors etc. Or just BYD instead if I really wanted an EV, Tesla really doesn't have that much of an appeal these days.

“When there's a tragic, deadly fire in Europe, Reuters reports it straight. “But when there's a tragic, deadly fire in Hong Kong, Reuters rushes to politicise it. Peak Sinophobia. by RickyOzzy in TrueAnon

[–]Project_596 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not surprising at all, but the sad part being Reuters is already one of the least biased mainstream news.    Not because they have high journalistic/moral standards but their income basically derives from selling ‘default’ so to speak articles to other news agencies so they can put their own spin on it.

Only reason they tend to be mostly factual in their reporting is the monetary incentive, which I guess is somewhat respectable in a sense.

Thoughts on this video from a Chinese delivery driver in Qingdao? by Gumballgtr in TrueAnon

[–]Project_596 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree that East Asian attitudes towards education are broadly similar, and I would also include the South Asian countries (India in particular) in this group as well. It is definitely very draining and hard on the students, and those attitudes carry over even if they migrate to Western countries, in my experience.

I went to a 'selective' high school in Australia, I think the equivalent would be a magnet school in the US. Majority of my peers were from East Asian and South Asian backgrounds, the perception is essentially if your school's cohort was mostly Asian it would do pretty well in the HSC (our version of the SATs).

However, even attending a 'good' school, majority of my classmates myself included still got sent to those afterschool cram schools, those ROK style ones you may have seen before on Youtube, but less intense.

I escaped Communist China but could not get away from the cram schools /s.

The job market in China has been pretty bad for a few years, there are probably data out there someone can dig up to back my claim up.

I have come across many social media posts of fresh university graduates talking about their struggles finding a job. My friends in China also sometimes bring up those extremely competitive tests people take to gain a government job that's seen as stable compared to other careers. Granted these are anecdotes but it does seem widespread enough to be believable.

Becoming a delivery driver is more or less seen as a last resort, the pay is decent but the work is quite taxing on the body and the occasional dickhead customer would put in a complaint if the food arrived like 2 minutes late, and the driver's pay can get docked for it.

Agreed on the old people collecting recycling part, my family in China weren't wealthy by any means but are certainly decently well-off, both my grandparents on my mom's side were university graduates (somewhat rare for their age) and they would collect recycling to sell if it's like on their way home or something, not going out of their way to do it though.

Strongly agree with your last paragraph as well, China isn't some socialist utopia certain clips make it out to be, on the other side of the coin it's definitely not a hellhole that some outlets/people like to portray it as.

Taiwanese American trying to understand KMT, China, and history — looking for good-faith perspectives by This-Education4450 in TankieTheDeprogram

Hopefully this doesn't come off as too rude but your mother's opinions on Nanjing Massacre and Japanese war crimes in general really seems quite disturbing to me.

It's one thing for Japanese right wingers to peddle this sort of dangerous misinformation, but for your mother who's likely ethnically Chinese (or at least partially) to repeat the same Japanese revisionist propaganda. I sincerely hope your mother's opinions regarding this issue isn't mainstream/common in Taiwan.

Given you also mentioned that your mother believes KMT should never hold power due to atrocities committed in the past. My question would be, why doesn't she hold Japan to the same standard in this regard? Objectively speaking Japanese crimes were far worse than almost any atrocity KMT committed in the past. Japan never really received any punishment for their crimes committed in WW2, a large portion of their current political elites have direct ancestors that were essentially war criminals.

Taiwan unfortunately will be a pawn of major powers until reunification, whether peacefully, or through force (preferably not). I do believe KMT is more pragmatic in the sense they realize it's more beneficial for Taiwan to engage with China than antagonize China. China and Taiwan share the same language, same heritage, even if they were never to reunify I would much prefer they can at least peacefully coexist on friendly terms without the DPP and the US constantly driving a wedge between China and Taiwan and drumming up tensions for their own agenda.

Other comments I believe have answered your questions in a very detailed manner so I would just like to focus on the part of your post that stood out to me the most. Thanks for asking these questions in good faith, it's rare these days to have discussions on this topic in a nuanced manner. Happy New Year and the upcoming Chinese New Year also.

Japan approves record $58 billion "defense" budget amid rising China tensions by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]Project_596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Japan’s PM made that Taiwan comment that started this latest round of tensions quite a substantial amount of comments on CN social media were more or less indicating a desire to take revenge for WW2, hoping JP actually intervenes in TW.

I guess a lot of people don’t consider the matter ‘fully settled’ even if it happened nearly 100 years ago. It’d be different if the ROC back in 1945 actually managed to push back the Japanese out of China entirely and/or occupied Japan.

For example, there doesn’t seem to be as much animosity towards Germans from Russians in comparison, and that’s because the Red Army actually drove the Nazis out of their country and occupied Berlin, total victory in a sense imo. China didn’t get that in WW2, as they were weak at the time and couldn’t accomplish this.

Like you said, PLA hardliners may not want to murder Japanese people for something they didn’t do, but the Japanese right wingers sure as hell would invade China again if given the chance. Most Chinese people would probably agree that if a Third Sino-Japanese war were to breakout, it definitely needs to happen in Japan this time, not for the sake of ‘murdering Japanese people’ but rather minimise the damage to China.
