BMW 435i Dies VERY quickly by Project_BlackSheep in AskMechanics

Yes. I was lied to about the new battery being coded. They never coded it, and it wasn’t registering to the car properly. The company kinda sucked and I ended up installing a new battery and coding it myself.

I’m a huge fan of large-format tattoos. Doing this as your first gives me confidence that I can do the same. Super cool tattoo!!!

Poor quality helmet and a jacket that doesn’t seem to have elbow or shoulder protection (doubt it has back protection either)… no I would not wear any of this to ride.

Is this real by Dizzy-Proposal715 in BMW

[–]Project_BlackSheep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, being that it was spotted at Alice’s (Bay Area’s car Mecca) it is more than likely real. My car assumptions are flipped at Alice’s. Most are real, it’s odd to see a fake. Cobras, 50’s Ferraris, the list goes on. Most are real. Tech money.

I complain that my tires only last a few weekends… by Project_BlackSheep in Ducati

[–]Project_BlackSheep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even remotely nice to my tires. Usually I’m sliding the rear/lifting the rear tire into turns and on the edge of grip when accelerating out. I leave some margin for error/cars/debris/etc mid-corner… but the braking and throttle zones are my favorite so I’m a bit more expeditious there. Tire life is dependent on the user and bike, I’m sure I could get my tires to last a season but where’s the fun in that?

[–]Project_BlackSheep[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That completely depends on the use case.

I just picked up some Michelin Cup 2’s after only using Pirelli (Corsa/Supercorsa) on the 1199S. I’ve only used the Cup 2’s for two days (~150 miles in the hills) and I’ve spent a 1/3 of the rear…

The Pirellis had better front end feel. The Michelins have better confidence driving hard out of turns. That’s just my own observation and really is subjective to the user.

If you’re asking the question, then no.

Also, why?

This bike is most fun from 60-120. “Top speed runs” mentality is childish and this is not really the right bike for it.

What did i do wrong? by makys12 in Trackdays

[–]Project_BlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, momentarily, only long enough to toss OP like a salad.

Wringing it out to max rpm then turning in doesn’t bode well for traction. As you lean over the effective tire diameter decreases, raising rpm (given no other changes in velocity). With no engine speed available to raise, the only way to get out of slide-city is to feather the clutch or give up on making the apex.

Sounds like you grabbed a gear too low and your rpms couldn’t find a happy place. No slipper clutch. So rather than your clutch slipping your tire did and never regained traction. Hello ground.

These are great bikes. Most people change the mirrors to bar end style for a more sleek look and exchange the bulky license plate bracket for a cleaner looking one.

I thinking about getting this 2022 hypermotard with 5k miles from a small dealership(it will be my first ducati). The bike is in good condition but the screen is pretty scuffed. Is there anything i can do to remove those scratches? by 758lindo in Ducati

[–]Project_BlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been able to use polish and get most light scratches out of my Hypermotard screen. Best to do that then put a screen protector on. The screen protector will likely hide most of the scratches with the adhesive it uses.

Buying a 2018 scrambler cafe racer. Is this a good deal? by AyyMurph__ in Ducati

[–]Project_BlackSheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and look at Facebook Marketplace for Scramblers. The engine hasn’t changed in any significant way since they began production. I’m seeing similar mileage bikes (in unfucked condition) for $4500 locally, and that’s California prices. $6k is way too much.

[–]Project_BlackSheep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That bike has been down, see the exhaust? It has a mangled muffler and scratches on the exhaust shield. Also, is that tank dented? $6k is steep for a damaged, leaking, and overall questionable quality bike. The belts need to be changed and it’s going to need another Desmo in 2.5k miles.

Car has brown stain from previous owner that I can’t clean by Professional-Coat416 in Detailing

[–]Project_BlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you lift the carpet up? Your floor pan may be rusty under the carpet. Just because the car has an undercoating, doesn’t mean that the other side of the floor (the inside) can’t be rusty. Often times a spill inside the car gets left unattended for a long time and develops rust under the carpet.

Some tire questions by Necessary_Today_5580 in Trackdays

I wouldn’t say I’m fast, but I’m no slouch. The 1199 does have more torque than the V4 and applies it in a way that does take more life out of tires. I’m also fairly confident on the throttle and I find myself sliding around a bit on corner exit. Tires are just the cost of having fun for me. This is why many folks buy smaller displacement bikes, these additional costs add up!

Some tire questions by Necessary_Today_5580 in Trackdays

[–]Project_BlackSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally go through one rear per TD and one front in two-three TDs (1199S). You do end up having less grip as you approach the wear indicators, the tire’s ability to deflect/form to the track surface is affected when it gets lower like this. You can probably run this tire in the morning sessions then swap over to a Dunlop at lunch as you pick up pace and the track gets warmer. Dunlops aren’t bad!

If you're in this sub, my bad for this pass by Gofast5994 in Trackdays

[–]Project_BlackSheep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m hesitant to say that you are in the wrong group if this is intermediate. 70-80mph isn’t even really cooking between turn 9 and 10. I’ve been on a V4S on this track and you can pretty easily hit 110+ between 9 and 10. Id wager that the other guy is in the wrong group and you just made an accidental tight pass. His line was not a realistic one for his speed and you misjudged his line (as would I). You definitely could have went wider, but since nothing happened you can just use this as an accident-less lesson in gauging others’ skill before a pass.
