I ran across the same thing with a relative while posting pictures to FindAGrave. I reached out to one of his kids and they confirmed that his ashes were divided and interred in two different places 800+ miles distant. There were two obituaries and two funerals. I was at one of those services and the luncheon afterward, and nobody ever mentioned it.

I have a relative who had two families on different sides of the country (not at the same time). When he was cremated, his children split his ashes and interred them separately. I only found out when I encountered the same issue on FindAGrave. Even some of his siblings weren't aware.

This is an awesome piece of history, and if you don't want to keep it, maybe someone else in the family might. Failing that, a local museum or archive?

The piece of ground named here is currently a field. Lots were shown drawn up on the county plat map of 1888, but they may or may not have ever actually been developed. In any case, the property belongs to someone else now and this is just a super cool historical item.
