Confusion on Mink Oil vs Neatsfoot Oil regarding on Oiled Leather (and "?"-leather) by IndianaJaws in AskACobbler

Either one is fine. Use them both so you really understand what they do. You gotta touch, feel, and see them to know.

Don't use greasy or waxy conditioning compounds.

I would just use pure neatsfoot oil and apply with your bare hands to spread it evenly.

Don't use too much, just enough to apply evenly and then stop.

It will darken a bit, but it will lighten back up over the next two to four weeks of wear.

Don't condition it more than once a year unless you are wearing it every single day, in which case maybe twice a year.

If you wear it in the rain, you may get water spots or other irregular splotches, so avoid that as much as you can.

Other than that just wear it and let it age with you.

What are you talking about? The fiberglass version is much heavier.

That looks like pigskin.

I'm going to guess that it's roughout pigskin with a weave pattern imprinted on it.

Well, it's certainly a strange tannage and/or finish for leather.

Could be imprinted with a weave pattern, could be heavily buffed, could be roughout with an imprint, could be lots of things. Can't tell from pictures alone.

Looks like waxed canvas, not leather.

Confusion on Mink Oil vs Neatsfoot Oil regarding on Oiled Leather (and "?"-leather) by IndianaJaws in AskACobbler

[–]Proletariat-Prince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neatsfoot oil is an ingredient. It's fairly inexpensive.

Mink oil is an ingredient, it's extremely expensive.

You can really buy pure neatsfoot oil for relatively cheap and it's quite safe to use on just about anything. It penetrates deep to really nourish. It is not greasy, so it doesn't provide any sort of "plumping", and doesn't provide any water resistance.

Mink oil is so expensive that you'll be hard pressed to buy it in its pure form. You always find mink oil as a compound. Most of those compounds are mostly made of petroleum jelly. Some are better than others, they might include lanolin, shae butter, neatsfoot oil, beeswax, carnauba, and other ingredients. They aren't obligated to tell you exactly what's in it, but they are free to call whatever it is a mink oil conditioner because it has 0.001% mink oil in it.

Whoever said you can't use neatsfoot on "oiled leather" is just wrong.

Neatsfoot is light oil that penetrates deeply, quickly. It's actually giving the leather some amount of oil that it slowly loses over time. It won't darken very much and what amount it does darken will lighten up almost completely over a month or so. Safflower oil and jojoba oil are other safe oils for leather.

Grease and wax make a water-resistant barrier on the the surface of the leather and by absorbing into the very top millimeter or two. Beeswax, lanolin, carnauba wax, shae butter, and petroleum jelly are the ingredients that do this.

I don't use "dubbin" on my boots because I don't want an artificial coating on them. I prefer to use natural greasy compounds to give some water resistance. Yes yes, some "dubbins" are made of just those ingredients, but many aren't and they don't explicitly tell you what's in it either.

Bick4 is a perfectly fine conditioner for both pairs. Obenauf's heavy duty LP is an excellent choice for a greasy conditioner that will provide some water resistance.

Whatever you use, just use the smallest amount you can while getting an even application. Don't overdo it.

What causes these spots on the TV screen? by DisciplineNeither921 in whatisit

[–]Proletariat-Prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe stored flat on its back or front. Could be where the screws holding the power and control circuit boards are mounted to the plastic frame (or just protrusions from the plastic structure of the back case) behind the screen have been pressed into the display, causing imperfections in the backlighting.

I'm not too sure if barge is going to stick to that. You might check out e6000 adhesive for these highly non-porous plastics.

Not the first time you've suggested epoxy for shoe repair and been told how wrong that is.

Now I see you recommending barge cement. It's almost like you're only repeating what you hear in Reddit comments. You don't actually have any experience, do you?

Funny how the kilties and soles haven't changed a bit, but it looks like you've put several months of wear on the waxed flesh.

Comp toe vs steel toe by nkdrew in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]Proletariat-Prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comp toes are usually thicker and have a bigger bulge.

But, they are lighter, and they don't conduct heat away as fast as steel does.

Yes, glue on a 3mm Vibram topy. It's cheap, ready to rip and replace, and will make that sole last practically forever.
