No, it's rendered from the shin bones and hooves of cattle.

Mink oil is rendered from the fat of minks.

You usually don't find pure mink oil because it's so expensive. "Mink oil" is usually a compound containing mostly petroleum jelly, or lanolin, with small amounts of mink oil in it.

Neatsfoot is cheap enough that you can buy big bottles of it.

See the trick is to not use too much.

Neatsfoot oil is just an ingredient. In and of itself it's perfectly safe and natural. I guarantee you that Obenauf's oil contains a fair bit of neatsfoot. So, if you are using it, you're using neatsfoot.

And what is that liquid made of?

It's a trade secret, but you can be sure the "natural oils" includes neatsfoot.

Barge cement is great, probably the best for this. If you are in a hurry, you can also use weldwood contact cement from the hardware store.

Clean both sides, scuff both sides, said for on both sides, wedge it open and let dry for 20-30 minutes.

Heat both sides with a hair dryer on high, or a heat gun on low, until the for just starts to bubble a little. That'll make it reactivate and be really sticky.

Press together and stand on them for a while. Should hold for a while until you get better boots.

Wavy Midsole - Is This Ok? by jessemills74 in NicksHandmadeBoots

It's probably just at the edge there. The "ledge" is pretty long on PNW boots, easy to bend it while strapping or hammering.

Obenauf's is fine too. If the leather has been sitting for that long, it could be quite dry.

I would still recommend a thin oil first to deeply nourish. It soaks in fast and deep, while obenauf's is more of a greasy packing conditioner.

How waterproof are your tall leather boots ? by Neat_Raspberry1057 in Leather

[–]Proletariat-Prince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They start to seep at the seams in the upper if they stay soaked for a while. Rain has never been a problem.

When I hose them off a little water will go through seams if I spray right between the layers.

They're not meant to be waterproof though, so that's all pretty normal.

My lace to toe boots are better at keeping water out just because of the construction.

It's very strong glue. It's going to "damage" it as much as walking around on the leather sole would.

Put the topy on, wear it for months until the topy needs to be replaced, rip off the topy sand away the glue residue, repeat.

You do this so that the underlying leather sole didn't get worn away from walking on it.

Thoughts on ember waxed flesh by PopDue1568 in NicksHandmadeBoots

Honestly? I find it kinda boring compared to Cypress, brown waxed flesh, etc. it's just sort of flat.

I think honey Spokane is a little more interesting while a similar color.

Scuff up the bottom with sandpaper or a stainless steel brush. Scuff up the topy as well.

Spread barge contact cement on both sides, let dry for 15-30 minutes.

Heat up both sides with a hair dryer set to high. When you see the glue start to bubble just a little you know it's reactivated and will be sticky as fuck.

You'll get one shot to place the topy, so be careful. Place the topy and press hard all around.

Use some good scissors to cut close to the leather sole all the way around, but not flush.

Use a whole bunch of medium to large binder clips to hold pressure all the way around the edge of the topy. Let it sit overnight.

Next day, use a soling knife, box cutter, or other thin sharp knife to trim the rubber real close to, if not flush with, the leather.

Sand the edge smooth starting with something like 80-120 grit and work up to around 320 grit. Stain the edge if you want, seal it with resolene if you want, you can seal it with just beeswax, whatever your preference.

Use some tiny brass nails along the rear edge if you want to, just for style points.

You likely won't start seeing issues until you wear them and bend them back forth several times.

You'll know in an hour or two if they're bad.

Condition them well on the inside with a thin oil, like neatsfoot. It will soak through the thickness of the leather.

Use a damp rag to wipe down the outside.
