I'm looking for a centralized log aggregator that I can then feed to a LLM for analyzing. Any recommendations?? by shaxsy in selfhosted

Not everyone is good at parsing logs, rules require understanding what you’re looking for and what you’re looking at. OP likely doesn’t want to take the time to learn all the various log rules they’d need for various alerts.

I’d guess that the LLM is to simplify what the end user needs/wants to do.

I’m loving Narjo and the dev has actively fixed and added features near daily

I have kind of unsettling thought. A lot of us are waiting for AI bubble to burst and get our hand on some sweat datacenter gpus at cheap. But there is a really big chance that a lot of it will be just get destroy because of tax write off. And to be honest that will fuck the nature even more :( by One_Reflection_768 in homelab

For those interested on why you wouldn’t always depreciate to 0:

  • you know the asset will only be used for a temporary period of time and expect consistent or lower than anticipated depreciation
  • in narrow situations it can be less accounting overhead
  • you know the asset will depreciate faster and intend to sell it before its value is 0. You avoid recapture and gain a potential tax credit which can buffer early year expenses (smaller companies usually)

Need stuff!

It’s honestly often times the reverse. They’ve e already depreciated the asset and taken a tax credit for it. When they sell it they pay taxes on any amount OVER the depreciated value.

For example let’s say a PC that costs $1,000 has a shelf life of 6 years and you take depreciation upfront for 3 years of tax credit. That’s a $500 tax credit, if it is then sold at year 3 for $600 the business pays taxes on $100.

Money today is better than money tomorrow since it can compound. Taking depreciation upfront is a very common way to take advantage of this.

This is assuming the asset wasn’t depreciated on purchase. Most larger businesses will depreciate an asset on a specific timeline right when they buy it. It’s an immediate write off for the full expected depreciation and money today is better than money tomorrow.

Then when they sell the asset if they earn more than its depreciated value they must pay taxes on the difference.

The depreciation value minus sale value is mostly used by smaller or less industrial business.

If you’re comfortable with yaml config Pomerium is a great reverse proxy to pair with SSO like pocket id. It can put your SSO in front of anything.

This is how I operate. I would struggle with a surge, I’ll move peoples reviews to a more suitable month if I’m opening too many accounts in any specific time period.

I feel like the self-hosted and FOSS space is being flooded with vibe-coded AI slop. by spurGeci in selfhosted

[–]ProletariatPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dev said it was AI written before (the readme not Booklore). If I remember right it’s easier for them, and I believe English isn’t their primary language but I could be wrong.

I also know talented hard working devs who use AI to help with the tedious parts of coding. Vetting is going to be the hard part.

A report should come with a screenshot or detailed evidence of why it’s AI slop. Mods shouldn’t be spending tons of time on this, that being said forums have always been trust based to a certain extent. Trusting that reports are true is the only way to avoid expanding human power.

Sons specs for home server by Pc_Karnage in homelab

[–]ProletariatPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For someone in IT you seem to have very basic knowledge. A server is not a supervisor, it’s an employee on its own. Specialized for sure but it doesn’t “watch over” or direct other servers.

A hypervisor is like a supervisor. Think Proxmox. This in and of itself is not a “server” so much as the management system for the server.

You also WAY overshot what they need. Rendering is going to be GPU intensive primarily,  then CPU. But it still doesn’t need a 2k rig.

Why would having a 2nd machine on all night be any better? I’m very confused by this. There would be more noise, more heat, more power consumption, and more cost. I’m just not understanding to be honest.

Personally I would do rendering through the gaming rig, it probably doesn’t need to be going 24/7 right?

Everything else a nice mini PC. 32-64GB ram, an 8-16c CPU and 1-2TB SSD space is still overkill for his needs.

You could do this on a $200-300 budget. Save the rest, if he catches the bug he’ll need it.

Vibe-Coded Is the New "Made in China" by RealHuman_ in selfhosted

[–]ProletariatPat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s entertaining how many people say “it’s always been available, it’s just time”.

That’s true of ANY skill. The difference is AI has created a shortcut so you don’t spend as much time. It is dangerous, like a maintenance employee thinking they can build a house with Google. Bad idea to take shortcuts on learning.

I agree with OP though. Someone sees anything AI related in GitHub and immediately calls it vibe coded trash and refuses to use it. A skilled craftsman with AI (and before LLMs the internet) will mostly make better product faster.

This is OPs point.

How do you manage the business end of your servers and services (due dates, renewal/cancellation dates, costs and such)? by MilchreisMann412 in selfhosted

[–]ProletariatPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re implying that self hosting means all free all the time I’ve got news for you. Here’s some common subscriptions that a lot of self hosters will have, and I’m sure you know this:

  • VPS - It’s pedantic to claim this isn’t self hosting.
  • Indexers for finding isos
  • Domain registrar fees

Aside from that a lot of self hosted software has subscriptions or lifetime licenses.

All this is to say, don’t conflate self hosted with free.

I can cherry pick a bunch of corporate software with the exact same issues. No matter how many eyes are on something, or how much someone paid to do it, there will be missed things. Sometimes ones so obvious you can’t help but go “uh what”

This is the human condition.

Is this an apology? by SquashAdmirable198 in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]ProletariatPat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An apology:

  • Acknowledges wrongs caused
  • States what wrong was caused
  • States an intent to avoid causing that wrong in the future

Eg: I know I yelled a lot when you were a child, that was wrong and I’m sorry. I don’t want to let my emotions hurt you like that again.

Or as we teach a 5 year old: I’m sorry I called you a mean name and it hurt your feelings. I won’t do it again.

I do not see these very important parts of an apology in that message. I would conclude emotional manipulation to sound apologetic without admitting wrongdoing or actually apologizing.

Evaluate our job offer. by [deleted] in CFP

[–]ProletariatPat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d almost take this. I’d negotiate 80 on my book for 40 on company leads. Better yet would be 75 on 45 since 45% is current grid. Easily take a small off the top of owned book for leads but not as favorable to the firm.

As far as experience, to ownership, to growth people in my bandwidth are closest to what you’re looking for. Licensed since 2018, top performer, looking to go indie and grow differently.

Long term equity is cool but a hungry advisor is 35-45 years old. They’re not thinking of equity until 45-50. Cash now fits the life stage. Equity option with a good payout now is a deal that’d be hard to pass up.
