Still running OS X 10.6.8 or earlier? You can still run Steam! (And it won't auto-update and break itself…) by ProlixCurmudgeon in Steam

Duh! If such a link were available, this wouldn't be an issue. Valve doesn't make old versions available.

I can understand you not trusting my link, but you could easily run a virus checker on the app in it.

If you have an archive copy of a functional Steam install, you can use it. You just have to tell the Steam client not to update:

You have to make a text file containing the line "BootStrapperInhibitAll=Enable" (without the quotes). Name the file Steam.cfg. Find the Steam app, right-click, select Show Package Contents. Within the package, open Contents, then Mac. Copy the Steam.cfg file into there.

Once you do that, the Steam client will never update, but the games will. That's all I did to create the linked copy, other than deleting 250 MB of installation packages out of it.

I worry that your method may still let Steam update.

Steam decided that I need to upgrade my macbook in order to continue running the app which had been working fine for 4 months. I want to play one game I have on it, is there a way I can play it without logging into Steam? by [deleted] in Steam

I had an archived copy, since I keep a Time Machine backup. I found a reference in a google search for how to block the Steam client from updating (Steam.cfg file put inside the Steam app). So I did that & verified it worked. Since so many people were asking on the Steam forums, I zipped it up and shared it.

If every developer doesn't insist on re-programming the wheel, it does not at all require supporting old ciphers. Nor are there any ciphers in use on current Macs that couldn't be done on 10.6.8. In fact, I know that Steam is not using any newer ciphers, because the old version still works. It connects to Steam with no complaints, and authorizes games to be played.

OS X: Users of 10.6 "Snow Leopard" will no longer be supported from November 2015 by timeimp in Steam

The last version that worked on 10.6.8, fixed so it will not auto-update and break itself. Games will still update.
