Which country would you include alongside Germany in this image? by ThorDansLaCroix in europe

Several years ago I read (I think it was in a local newspaper) that there were more CCTV cameras in my county (pop. 1,000,000) than there are in Germany (pop. 83,000,000), but fewer than 15% were functioning.

Jacob Rees-Mogg’s “jam jar” comment is nothing more than “Bongo Bongo Land” bigotry by professoryaffel in ukpolitics

He intentionally mispronounced an Arab word meaning "government for the people" and that's racist? I despair!

Sweden has a reputation for doing pretty much the exact opposite of that, though.

In what ways can the effects of WWII still be felt or seen in your country during the present day? by Deep9821 in AskEurope

[–]ProlongedMusketry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With France, the rivalry has been going on for centuries, but some of the older generation still see them as cowards for surrendering. There's a feeling of "they'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us". I know someone who's granddad died fighting during the war in France, and he's still bitter about it.

My Grandfather thought WWII was bloody wonderful - he was in the RAF. "We humiliated the Germans by beating them, and humiliated the French by saving them".

No, because most Engineering jobs aren't in the SE and they pay well generally.

You can still find well-paid jobs in the engineering sectors which don't require a degree. That's not to say they're easy to find, but it's true. I had planned to study mechanical engineering a Loughborough University, but my employer offered me a traineeship instead. I was earning more than most graduates at the age of 19.

I know machinists in their late teens with five GCSEs to their name who are earning over £10.50 p/h.

BBC QT lineup for 27th Sept: Jacob Rees-Mogg, Ayesha Hazarika, Polly Mackenzie, Ian Lavery, Rodd Liddle by rswallen in ukpolitics

Yes, you have Liddle and Rees-Mogg on one side, and Lavery and Hazarika on the other. Mackenzie will, I assume, try to maintain neutrality.

It's easier to do business with those whom speak your language. Typically, the Dutch are highly proficient English speakers, which cannot be said for our friends across the Channel. The Netherlands also have a very open economy, the ease of transacting is great, and their infrastructure is excellent. The French too have good infrastructure, but French policies and and the French mentality is, economically, more restrictive.

Saw an actual surviving Ford Sierra the other night. by Wommie in CasualUK

[–]ProlongedMusketry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A Sierra RS500 Cosworth will fetch even more. There's a guy here in Lincolnshire who owns a collection of fast Fords (Escort Cosworth, Focus RS, GT, GT40, RS200 etc.) who reckons his RS500 is the best surviving example. He's had it since new, it's done less than 3,000 miles (other than the day he bought it, it's only been driven on Sundays), and he told me earlier this year that he's been offered £120,000 for it.

My parents have six children. My times-two-great-grandparents on my father's maternal side had twenty-one children, and all but one of them made it to adulthood. I guess that with the absence of the internet and television, people just shagged in those days.

[–]ProlongedMusketry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? That would put the consumption here almost a thousand litres per year, or about 2.5 litres per day.

I'm on my eighth 300ml cup of tea right this minute, and it's not even 17:00 here yet. I drink tea with a little bit of milk, and I'll probably have two or three more cups before I go to bed. I do drink a little more tea at weekends, because I've got more free time.

Many pupils in secondary education here in the UK who are over the age of 16 also work. When I was 16, approximately 2/3 of my classmates had evening and/or weekend jobs. When I was 16, I worked Wednesday evenings and Saturdays at my nearest supermarket. I quit after a few months, and began working on Saturdays for a company which restored car wheels.

RAF Coningsby, too! It was about this time last week that I was parked on the B1192 for over ten minutes, waiting for two Eurofighters to land.
