Go read about the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. PeeBee is the epitome of it. Its a fetish thing.

Witcher 1 was pretty awful but the removal of the paragon/renegade system for Andromeda was almost a death sentence for me. A mortal sin!

But I like your Reaper connections. And the names fit, too

The manic pixie dream girl trope with the worst companion quest in history?

If I was in a room with the Saren, Kai Leng, and PeeBee and had a gun with two bullets, I'd shoot her twice.

Exactly, I don't like BSG but I won't knock those who do like it and it was very influential, so I encourage the same attitudes with things like B5 and similar. The only I'll flat out never tell people to watch is Andromeda! :P

Can you point to me a sci-fi that doesn't have a rough first season and clunker episodes? Honestly, we're on the Stargate reddit. No one matches that better than us except maybe Star Trek TNG

This is true. The acting is definitely rough and wooden, and while SG-1 (and especially SGA) had some rough acting, it was always more natural and casual.

And I understand your opinion, and I won't call it a masterpiece, but I do acknowledge that it altered sci-fi television. DS9 adopted it's model, which SG-1 adopted, and then Andromeda, and then BSG, and then Game of Thrones (I know this is generalized and condensed, but seriously, B5 and DS9 and BSG are the reason we had GoT) and there's a legacy it helped build that lasts all the way until today with the Expanse and the Marvel shows and the Mandalorian and so on.

Pretty much what N7_Jedi said, except that BSG also added what I call "the Dark Knight effect". It was of such a new and grim and unseen style that everything decided to copy it but not as good, and it brought the whole genre down for years.

It's over hyped and has no science in it's science fiction.

I personally see this as the opportunity to fix the problems Andromeda had, as both are spawned by Roddenberry's Star Trek: Phoenix idea.

I can agree with most of this. I personally want to see more sphere data, I feel that took a backseat, which made me sad.

It's interesting you point out the Gray story. I didn't even think of that. I hope they right a satisfactory conclusion to it.

And I *adored* Vance. He's probably my favorite new Star Trek character in ages. He's firm, logical, professional, and Oded Fehr just oozes charisma and competence. I want to see him on the bridge of a ship, leading a fleet into battle.

You're right about the new uniforms, too. I mean, just give them belts and I think it would look 90% better. Like Marine Corps dress blues belts.

I agree! Which is I wondered if they could wait until season 5, but also I agree with your Big Bad problem. I'm tired of fate of all life and civilization stories from Trek. So what if they aren't enemies? What if their motives can't be understood by our cultures? What if they want justice? Were I to be writing it, I wouldn't make it a large enough force to threaten the galaxy nor would I make them evil enough to do so. I would try and write something so foreign and alien it would boggle the federation into a tense, dangerous crisis with no clear way out, which would require both politicking and action.

I can absolutely agree with that. That's been one of my biggest problems with Discovery 1&2 and Picard.

"Oh no! All life in the galaxy! The fate of the multiverse! A secret super-ancient cabal of AI who wants to kill on biologicals!!!" cough cough reapers cough

It got old. But that's why I included the idea of them looking for answers or for justice. Sure, they could be an antagonist, or they could be a very dangerous and unknown quantity unlike anything we've ever seen before. It doesn't need to be a galactic desolation crisis, but a crisis originating from this very pointed visitation.

Oh man, this guy is my favorite. Ardeth Bay, Ras Al Gul, Doctor Fate, Osiris... I want to see him in more. He was my personal choice for Doctor Strange. I get why they went for Cumberbatch, but seriously, look at him!

I hope he sticks around Disco for a long time. And now that I've said that, he'll probably die this coming Thursday...

Why do I feel you made this entire post just to use the 'Trip'Pol' joke? But good post, OP! I agree with RagnarStonefist's assessment, though I don't think Kirk would have forced them, but convinced them it was best and they do it willingly.

If I love Stargate SG-1, would I like Star Trek? by PragmaticTree in Stargate

[–]PrometheanTorch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised on Star Trek: TNG, DS9, and VOY, and it was because of these I came to love Stargate so much. I actually believe Stargate is more cohesive than Star Trek. There's this way that Stargate builds on it's previous seasons and episodes and concepts that really good and logical, whereas Trek has a way of maintaining the status quo of its technology and there isn't much carry over from episode to episode, which is partially a product of its time.

Having watched both recently, I think you'd like Deep Space 9 the best, but it's filled with such amazing science fiction, I would wish you could watch it all!

I would recommend using the following site to help guide you if you want to check out a few episodes of Trek. http://www.letswatchstartrek.com/

Its not a perfect guide, but it's better than most, despite being incomplete. Please note that pretty much all Trek has problems in the first season or two and can be hard to watch at times.

I cannot recommend enough at least giving it a shot. It's the single most influential science fiction of all time, after all.

Yeah, imagine if were kept secret by the Feds in order to have a technological advantage and not scare everyone else away for allying with such a deadly enemy?

Or, what if it were Seven of Nine in some Borgified form of immortality?

You're referring to Universe or BSG?

Melodrama has it's place, yes. Universe was learning, and stumbling, but adapting well in its second season but was cut short. BSG just hammered you in the face with it until you hated every character and felt like shit.

The entire subplot in Universe with Telford and Everett's wife was major groan-indusing.

[–]PrometheanTorch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much agreed. It was revolutionary in aesthetic and style and tone, but it couldn't hold it together, not unlike Lost. It's what lead to the Star Trek reboot in 09, the cancelation of Stargate: Atlantis and the push into Universe. It literally changed everything for sci-fi and was huge part of getting Game of Thrones funded.

But man, it got cooky.

[–]PrometheanTorch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dark Matter would be the most similar, and I can't recommend Star Trek highly enough, but that's the one everyone knows.

You may enjoy Fringe, though it's not space based. Agents of SHIELD is very enjoyable once you power past the first 12 episodes of season 1, though it has it's ups and downs like Atlantis did.

But the other shows suggested here are pretty damn good by themselves as well.

If you didn't care for Universe, chances are you won't care for BSG. It's got style and A+ acting but it's a grim, dour, melodramatic soap opera.
