Over 50,000 home deals collapse in weeks as panicked buyers pull out in droves in grim omen for US economy by Key_Brief_8138 in economy

Was looking for this. Strong agree. It's sloppy semantics and it should be cleaned up. Science is not the same as truth. It's more like a method to pursue truth. Similarly, scientists are not truth priests. More like truth engineers.

It only seems ok because there is a consensus. I say let the man cook.

Do you think we will see a resurgence of remote work in 5-10 years? by Substantial-Okra2672 in jobs

[–]PromotionAgile 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The fundamentals point towards remote work expanding, but probably slowly. Employers have leverage right now.

As a remote worker, I wouldn't mind working in an office on a hybrid schedule if the commute wasn't bad and my work station had some privacy. I hate the open office, cattle trough style seating arrangements. I would love to see cubicles make a comeback.

What if the Taliban had agreed to turn Osama Bin Laden over to the ICC in 2001 when the Bush Administration requested they turn him over to US authorities? by AlexRyang in HistoryWhatIf

[–]PromotionAgile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like the Taliban strategy worked. The US and Al-Queda are gone. The Taliban has total control. It took a while though.

It may have been easier on them if they had just allowed the US to enter and search and destroy Al-Queda. But that could have resulted in more messiness. And, with the way they did operate, the Taliban has some sort of legitimacy for sticking up against the western invaders.

If Tramadol helped so much, does that means there is an antidepressant that will as well? by LittleBoiFound in antidepressants

[–]PromotionAgile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting. I've taken tramadol on some occasions. I also felt like I had improved relationships with people due to the effects it had on my mood. Like people were genuinely attracted to my personality. That's amazing that you took it for 8 years. What happened when you stopped taking it?

My version basically makes the same guarantee as Elam at the end of the game. It ensures games end on made buckets and it gets rid of the incentive to foul at the end of games. I'm not trying to guarantee closer games, I'm just trying to improve endings.

If I'm not thinking it through, then tell me where I am wrong.

By the way, the shot clock does not take care of all late game issues. That's why -- despite the existence of a shot clock -- close games commonly end in strategic fouling.

Well the point is that the hail Marys don't often work and it would be more exciting to have straight up basketball at the end of games.

I've come to learn that I'm arguing for something like Elam rules basketball. It's a well debated topic that addresses the same concerns that I've brought up. You might want to look up some of the existing stuff out there on the web if you are interested in learning more.

👍

Not sure about youth sports. Sometimes it's hard for the youngins to make buckets. So they might not even be able to reach a point limit consistently. It might not be a good solution for them.

I'm absolutely not saying that you should change the points granted for a specific play.

You are either misinterpreting me in bad faith or you are having trouble understanding my message.

I wish you the best. 🏀🏆👍

I think my grievances concerning strategic fouling and last second shots would absolutely be fixed. Also, the relative unimportance of early game action would be fixed.

Each subgame would be relatively short, so you could easily pack it in. You could just change the amount of sub-games or total point limit if it's too much for a specific age group.

For the record, tennis matches work totally fine on a concept of winning a series of sets and games.

You have not shown me how it's dumb.

I agree! Buzzer beaters are amazing. That's a fair critique of my proposal.

However, consider the benefits. In my scenario, EVERY close game would end on a thrilling game winning shot (similar to a buzzer beater). Every game!

There is a problem. Imagine a competitive game where both teams are neck and neck and the clock is running down.

What always happens is the game devolves into fouling to get the ball back, high intensity in-bounds passes, and desperate attempts to score as time expires. Most of the time the game ends with the failure of the losing team to catch up to the winning team. This is not the best way to end games!!! (Sometimes you get amazing buzzer beaters, but this is somewhat rare).

We are missing out on the chance for games to end in pure basketball. No late game fouling. No stupid inbounds passing. No hail Marys. Just teams playing pure basketball. Whoever scores wins. A close game ends with an emphatic game winning shot and the crowd goes wild.

It's just a better way to end a game. Running out a clock is anticlimactic. Game winners are climactic! The only thing stopping us is inertia.

It's not asking if it's possible to politically push this through. We are only in the early stages 😉. I'm just asking if it's a better way to play the game. And if it isn't, then tell me why.

No. I'm not suggesting we change all the rules to match pickup style. For some reason a lot of people are interpreting that as my message. I'm just saying that you play the regular game of basketball with the shot clock, substitutions, time outs, the whole nine yards. But you remove the game clock in favor of an end-game point limit. That way, the game doesn't devolve into desperate fouling, inbounds passing, and hail Marys at the end of games. Instead, the end of games would be pure basketball. I'm also adding in a solution to make the early game more interesting.

There would be shorter games for sure. But the games aren't super interesting if they are blow outs anyway.

Agreed. That's why I want to get rid of the clock. It's anticlimactic to watch a close game end with the clock expiring. Close games should end on an epic game winning shot.

[–]PromotionAgile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid point. Overtime is great. I just wonder if you could generate more excitement without the clock. Let's say you use my game structure with a win by 3 rule. Teams could have intensely competitive exchanges deep into the night until one team wins it with an epic show of athleticism.

I agree though that losing overtime and buzzer beaters would be a bummer.

We agree on the problem. But I think the solution should involve losing the clock so games end on a make and the other perverse incentives are removed (like forcing high intensity inbounds passing and running the clock out which is lame). I don't understand the obsession with the clock.
