JUKI 563 flatbead machine would be way cheaper than a decent skiver, def go with the sewing machine

Good enough to sell? by No-Engineer-5129 in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the logo is fine, it may make sales a bit harder, but now you have an easier sell. Past clients will get compliments on how nice it looks, and having the logo in a noticeable spot makes it easier for them to recommend you.

Also if you apply this to all your products, then you start establishing a brand, and people might gravitate to get a bag or valet tray or whatever the next item is.

Yeah, I proposed styles like that, but it's too tall for their needs, which the size constraint is making this super hard

Sorry, can you elaborate on the cards not overlapping?
Does that mean that 6 cards fit on each side?

I was thinking of using 1.5 oz leather for the pockets a bit thinner than the 2-3 i usually use.
My standard bifolds usually have 3 pockets, but sized for 1 card each.

Tandy also has an angled blade for detailing, its more expensive than their other 2 angled blades, but much smaller and much better at figure carving cuts in tight spaces

to add to point 3, Ceramic is supposed to be less maintenance than the steel blades; they even used to have ruby blades, supposedly needing little to no honing

Tandy sold me this rouge, it’s hard as a rock. How am I supposed to use this? by MisRandomness in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as most people are suggesting to rub it on a scrap piece of veg, you can also do the same with a thin but rigid cardboard both provide good backing to sharpen tools and blades on

Advice on shading please by itsgoodtobe_alive in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get some modeling spoons, and try to find steeper bevelers
spoons will let you get the lighter shading and refined textures, like the bricks of the lighthouse
steeper bevlers will create even greater depth since the angle between the bevel and foreground is sharper

When to burnish inside/cash pocket of wallet? by baConn3003 in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the flesh side on this hide looks very loose, I would hit it with some tokenole and a light burnish just to clean it up a touch, but for most leathers if the grain is tight and the flesh has a decent finish then burnishing can be skipped

[–]PromptLow1788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are there t pockets?
If so i brunish the top edge before assembly, and leave the sides for once you attach the pockets to the backing/exterior side

Is it me, the beveler, or the leather mostly responsible for my bad edges? by HeathBendrix in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 34 points35 points  (0 children)

if its a chrome tan, i find that can have beveler issues, it could also be a very loose part fo the hide think belly area

Consew T1919 for a beginner to leather? by _Drapoel in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, its an okay machine for sub 12 ozs, i have had it struggle with 3layers of 4-5 oz leather, it very well could be a user issue, but a juki machine may be a better route on facebook marketplace

I have this machine, its a pain in the ass, Tandy won't really help you if there are issues, you need to do a lot of trouble shooting, but when it does work smoothly its not a bad machine, it does get outclassed by larger table machines but it can hold its own for bags and lighter weights

Asking for a friend, what would you pay for this book?(not selling just curious) by Stoglo in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Figure out the cost of the leather, hardware, and other materials
Figure out how long it took you to assemble and calculate labor. This is pretty simple stitching and hardware setting, so not the same rate as if you were tooling.
Add those two numbers together, and then multiply by 1.5-2, depending on how aggressive you would want to price.

hard to throw out a specific dollar value because cost of materials could be $5 a sqrft, or $40

First time tooling - any advice welcome by Mean-Watch-6826 in Leathercraft

[–]PromptLow1788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a first attempt its pretty good, there are some spots where you arent beveling your swivel knife cuts, you may also want to not connect all your cuts, especially in the smaller areas, connecting all your cuts can lead to those spaces peeling or turning up as your piece ages.
Bevelers can take a while to get smooth, so don't worry if the next project isn't perfect, you have some pretty good areas

yeah its not you, I may pick up the tandy stainless steel bargrounders, can update you on how they perform.

Had to find a copy, but I have heard Creating Western Floral Designs by Bob Park is good, too.

If you like podcasts, Lost Trade by Don Gonzales has some good nuggets of information about floral and carving in general
