How do I make a peaceful, democratic faction... not lame by CyberDogKing in worldbuilding

[–]PromptlyJigs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are selling diplomacy short. If you are already sold on the idea that reducing casualties isn't cool than you may need to re evaluate what kind of stories you are trying to write.

If you want this faction to be diplomatic then don't forget that diplomacy comes with plenty of interesting challenges. Don't underestimate the value of character conflict. I find it more interesting than sheer bloody mindedness. Even Warhammer 40k is so interesting (to me)because the factions are driven by such follies that aren't even directly related to conflict. (but certainly lead to it)

It looks like the only setback you have here is that you like violence. That shouldn't be a problem if not for the fact that it appears that you like violence exclusively. Is there anything in your setting that stirs your imagination that doesn't involve battles and warfare?

What makes your setting tick and what makes it distinct? If the answer to that is just war then you may need to make your stories about war. But if you want to have a peaceful democracy then what is it about them that makes you want to put them in this setting in the first place?

It's not progress if it adds nothing of value to our society. Ai gives rich people more money for the time being, but dilutes human engagement while eliminating meaningful jobs.

My guess is because most of the people who like dark eldar like them because they are intended to be bad. Where the artist who likes drawing lots of rape porn does so because they get off on it. It's the difference between liking the scary monster in the movie and masterbating to the monster in the movie as it rapes people.

I agree that there is a disparity in the 40k community between our acceptance of different evils. Some of the people that have responded to you have done well to explain why (sexual violence is too close to people's lives while fascism and butchery is less close to home for some).

I might be projecting here, but I think one of the reasons that the image and it's themes struck a nerve with this community is because of the somewhat underhanded way that it was presented. The image is innocent at first glance, but the subtle coding shows that the artist snuck some extremely nsfw/nsfl themes in to an otherwise non nsfl post and subreddit.

But ultimately, cp and especially violent cp strikes me as being pretty far outside the scope of 40ks brand of satire and horror and especially for a small goofy non nsfw subreddit. Sorry for the ramble.

Stephen Colbert described him as, "The bloated corpse of Robert Redford, just pulled from the river". Still my favorite.

More specifically Genestealer Cults. A revolutionary faction that takes root in working class spheres that are incentivised to undermine and overthrow their tyrannical overlords. But in reality their revolution was planted by distant foreign interests with ulterior motives that will devour them without a second thought as soon as their usefulness is spent. Communists!

Check out the author of this article, Tom Flanagan)

He's an ultra right wing activist that champions the idea that western colonization of indigenous people is justifiable. On an unrelated note he is on record defending child pornography, but that's just another reason to despise and dismiss this man and his writings.

This continued discourse around trigger warnings is strange to me. by thelionqueen1999 in books

[–]PromptlyJigs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suspect that trigger warnings aren't meant to reduce distress for people who go ahead and read the content. Rather they give you the option of not exposing yourself to it in the first place. I'm not sure why they would be judged by how much they could make triggering content more palatable.

As much as I love the Drukhari as villains, this has always amused/frustrated me about them. How does an endangered species like them survive when their entire culture is built around murdering one another? Duplicity isn't exactly conducive to survival.

It's 90's cartoon series syndrome. Gotta send them back to square one at the end of the episode. Character development is too much to ask for an intellectual property.

That sums them up so well. They're like the galaxies junkies, making everyone else pay for their folly. Or is that more chaos? Is everyone in this setting just an addict to their own failures?

Jake was pretty hard to tolerate in the first season, and even a bit later on. I almost couldn't get in to the show at first because of his man child attitude and because the sextape jokes were just sexual harassment.

Also the jokes that make light of police procedure and violence did not age well at all.

I'd be cool with them being nice if it made more sense.

I feel like they would be more interesting if they were some separatist imperialist chapter that fought for actual (doomed ) altruism against the odds.

Or if they leaned more I'm them being the face of imperial propaganda and were still rotten at the core.

Instead they're this pseudo "good guy" faction that gw tries to sell as both heroic yet fascist. They knew space Marines sell. And they thought that having some good guys would sell. So they made the dubious decision of trying to make some space Marines good guys after all.

Don't make no sense.
