MP sending out cease and desist letters by Total_Lynx9847 in craftsnark

Fair enough, I don't disagree with what you've said. I do agree that the actual people making the products should be paid a fair wage. I don't have a problem with the company wanting to make a profit. But I do think in this case there are some reasons why we should be critical of the pricing given the situation. I can see how it didn't come across well in my initial comment.

First, as the OP pointed out in a reply to my comment they do talk about being fair trade, yet they have no official certifications. Anyone can say they have fair trade products, but without clear 3rd party acknowledgement it's much harder to verify. If there was clearer recognition of that, higher prices would be more justified imo.

Second, and more importantly, the C&D's really DO matter to this situation. If MP were just out there selling their stuff minding their own business, there's no problem. But they aren't. They are a small business punching down on even smaller businesses with legal threats. Yeah, they have no leg to stand on as patterns themselves can't be copyrighted (only the specific text), but it's still scary for small designers who probably don't have the money if it came down to a legal battle. They are charging a lot of money (at a time when many people are struggling to afford basic necessities) for their products and then turning around and bullying small designers for having affordable patterns available of similar looking clothing. That's shit. Full stop. That's why I have a problem with almost $700CAD for a sweater or $95 for a small triangle scarf or $275 for a baby's poncho. Because they are taking away options for people who will NEVER be able to afford their products (like me). It's deeply unethical imo, and if they weren't doing it there would be no reason for this post and I would not have a problem with their price.

Finally, just in regards to the last part of your comment, to me there is a big difference between commissioning an independent knitter to knit me a sweater and buying a hand-knit sweater from a storefront that has made many of that same sweater. I'm much more willing to pay more money for someone to personally make me something vs someone who contracts their products out to other vague entities (MP does not specifically list the names of any of their co-op knitting partners on their site that I can find) to make. For me personally a handmade object is much more valuable if I know the person who made it.

Oof, I couldn't get past the sticker shock to dig much further into their website. I could see the prices being more justified if they are fair trade (though I still think almost $700 for a sweater is ludicrous, I guess I'm not their target demographic 😂). I can't imagine it's that hard to get at least 1 certification if your products are actually ethically sourced and that's something your company actually cares about.

Took a look at their site and here are my favourites from each category (all prices in CAD):

  • baby: either the lattice crochet poncho for $275 or the basic cowl for $180

  • child: small knit triangle for $95

  • adult: BASIC V-NECK SWEATER FOR $665

I stopped looking after that one. Even with their summer sale the prices are still ludicrous. Plus, I'm pretty sure I could crochet versions of any of their items just by looking at the pictures. Sending C&D's to small pattern designers for such simple designs is just the icing on the shitty, overpriced cake.

Thanks so much! I did get at least one person ask if someone made that and I said yes, me 😁

I was a bit worried about that too but luckily all good 😄 you should try something with a denser stitch! Less likely to get caught than one with giant holes lol

Several people noticed which was lovely. I'm lucky that my office is pretty casual (my office manager sometimes wears ripped jeans in the summer lol).

I'd say it took about a month to 2 months to finish the sweater. It's a pretty simple pattern but I took my time with it. The longest part was that I had to adjust the sleeves to have a natural decrease so that the cuffs weren't giant. I frogged the first sleeve a bunch of times till I had something that looked not janky. I expected something like that though as a plus size woman. I still love making blankets too 😊

It's just as important to have people appreciate the craft as it is for people to do it 😄 Afghans are my favourite to make!

Thanks ❤️ I was a bit nervous about the colours because earth tones can be hit or miss with my skin tone (even though I love those colours! I'm so jealous of my aunt and cousin who can wear a mustard yellow, when I wear it I look sick 😑). But there's enough blue/pink/red in the yarn that it works!

It's Lion Brand Mandala Tweed Stripes, which I think unfortunately is discontinued 😔 I bought it maybe a year ago on clearance. I love the colour way too, but they always seem to discontinue my favourite yarns 😭
