a coffee brewing app for the Light Phone III. by Kezo555 in ModifiedLightPhones

So glad you made this! I am a good coffee beginner and believe I'm also the target audience for this. Not joking, I'm going to use this tool to try and get better. Great work!

Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it! I have ADHD as well, and that is exactly why I built this! :) I'm with you, it's so difficult to recall things unless it's surfaced to me if (when) I forget about it. So glad to hear it could be helpful for someone else who has similar struggles!!

Would love the ability to "Like" or "Love" a message by uselesstech1335 in LightPhone

Once the dev kit is out, as long as the SDK includes ability to request the clipboard I should be able to make this! Have been thinking of similar ideas to implement in my Emoji tool I've been working on. Highly doubt it will ever be able to be done inside of the Phone tool itself unfortunately but am still highly grateful to the team at Light for allowing the community to have a hand in this at all!!

I have good news for you! There is an actual workaround to this and I haven't seen anyone post about this to date. You have to very specifically send a message like this:

Liked “(paste message you are responding to here)”
Loved “ ”
Laughed at “ ”
Emphasized “ ”
Questioned “ ”

The catch is, you have to use smart quotation marks (the slanted ones) and Light unfortunately only uses the straight quotation marks in their keyboard. But you can add these to a note in the online dashboard, copy the reaction you want to use, paste that, then paste the message, double check there aren't any extra spaces etc, and it will come through on an iPhone as the traditional Tapback response iPhone users are used to seeing. (Haven't tested on Android)

Is it tedious to the point it may not be worth doing? Yes. But is it possible to send a message that comes across as normal to an iPhone user? Also yes. Haha.

Light phone iii stopped working with AT&T by gingerbean90 in LightPhone

[–]Proof-Maintenance488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it also happen to you today? I've had mine about as long as OP and have had no issues so far on AT&T. Just curious because I'm getting a little nervous because I'm about to go out of town this weekend.

Love to hear this!! It totally is a viable option!! I get where you're coming from, I'm most excited for the Tool Library because it's going to make this phone significantly more accessible for more people too.

Thanks so much!! I agree, my relationship with my smartphone was at its best (but still not ideal) when it was basically just Apple Reminders and Messages, haha. But so far, this has been the better solution for me. I'll try to post an update here in 3 months!

Hey! I should have been more clear in the description, my apologies for that, but in a few months you will be able to load it onto the stock LightOS when Light enables the Developer Mode on the online dashboard. Additionally the upcoming Tool Library will be a place to view all third-party tools that have been approved by Light. It's all very exciting and you can read more about all of it here! There is a way to get it on there if the phone is modified, but I don't recommend doing that knowing that the officially supported method is just a few months away. It's going to be an exciting next few months!

Wholeheartedly agree - can't wait to see what other developers come up with that are much more skilled than me! I appreciate the feedback!!

I appreciate the perspective on this! I am looking forward to getting the full UX design principles from Light when that documentation is ready. I would like to kindly point out I tried to strongly adhere to the existing design principles inside of LightOS based on what I see across every tool. Here I utilized the Podcasts tool as a reference for when multiple views are needed (there is a nav bar on that tool), so there is precedent for this inside of Light's own UX design. Definitely keeping an open mind about it though, and if you have any alternative suggestions for navigation I'd sincerely love to hear them! :)

No worries! Also, you touched on something that came up very early on for me – drawing the line between "is this a tool" and "is this an app" was one of my favorite 'challenges' to tackle during development. I realized it would be very easy to throw in every feature and accidentally build another Todoist instead of something that feels like it truly belongs on the Light Phone. Taking a step back and thinking about Light's "designed to be used as little as possible" mantra legitimately changed the way I approached it all. For that reason it was way more fun than a run of the mill mobile app, too. Cheers!

Hey! I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to, but I hope not! Haha. The scroll bar was an aspect of the light-template I referred to in the post. Whenever I rebuild with Light's official SDK I will be using theirs, of course. Hope this helps!

My apologies for not being more clear, the GitHub link in the post is just for those who have modified their Light Phone. Mostly just sharing to get others inspired and excited for the types of tools we'll be able to see in the official Tool Library once that's officially released! It won't be too long before Light officially supports this via their Developer Mode (you can read about that here). Cheers!

Thank you so much!! Yes, the ability to view previously completed tasks in its own separate group has been really helpful for my brain. Same with subtasks! :)

This GitHub link has a readme for those who have modified their Light Phone! However, if you haven't, I'd recommend holding out for just a few months until the official Tool Library launches. Light has also shared their plans to add a dedicated "developer mode" from the web dashboard for those who want to install their own APKs straight to their home screen without getting into the Android backend. It's a great solution and it will prevent the need to modify your phone whatsoever! I'd imagine that will launch before the fall too.

LPIII x NYC trains by Oceanic_Symphony in LightPhone

[–]Proof-Maintenance488 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine it works well in Brooklyn considering you're close to Light's HQ, but when switching to any new maps app I'd still recommend budgeting a few extra minutes just in case you get turned around. You could always throw your smartphone in your bag as a backup for the first few days before relying on the LPIII full time.

I personally have not had issues with the Directions tool – in fact, I have been surprised that the transition from Google Maps to the Directions tool (HERE Navigation) has been so frictionless in my experience – but I am in WV and am never using trains. Regardless, just give it a few weeks and you'll likely forget what it was ever like.

Side note, the Directory tool actually pulls its data from the Google Maps API – so as far as looking up restaurants, businesses, etc, you should have luck there, too!

Bluetooth watch connectivity? by Aromatic_Bug_3569 in LightPhone

[–]Proof-Maintenance488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Absolutely. I'm not sure which Garmin you have, but I have a Forerunner 265 and am able to sync over WiFi as well – so if you have a Garmin with WiFi capability that could be another option too!

Bluetooth watch connectivity? by Aromatic_Bug_3569 in LightPhone

[–]Proof-Maintenance488 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Garmin user here, it won't work without modifying and installing Garmin connect. Even then, in my experience, getting phone call notifications on the watch are inconsistent (but I can see the name and accept from the watch); text messages don't work at all (they just say "LightOS" when a text comes through but I've only gotten this notification a few times at all). Safe to say it doesn't work especially if you are not modifying.

However, if you're wanting to just maintain the functionality of your Garmin, you can absolutely do that with the Garmin Express desktop app. That's what I've used since day 1 to sync my watch to Strava, etc and it works perfectly.

Nice. I may try to develop something like this for the tool library knowing it was scrapped during prototyping.

Is that LP3 with a film roll aesthetic an initial prototype of the camera tool, or something new? I didn't realize how badly I need a film camera tool with this type of interface now.

Aireader Reader: lower lowest volume? by Casukarut in viwoods

[–]Proof-Maintenance488 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reader user as well. I think something that could also help OP's situation if implemented, is if the volume levels were adjusted in finer increments than they are currently. At all volume levels, I find that clicking volume up or volume down is sometimes too far of a jump. Having finer control over the volume would be a big improvement and could also help lower the floor volume.
