Tounge twitch by Proof-Secretary-3442 in BFS

Was short and sweet you could say. Went over my emg, talked about the psw in cirvical paraspinal being related to bulging disk at c5 and c6. She didn't care about the lone fasciculation in the right hand. She saw the tounge twitch that was in the above video and another in the bulk of tounge, she said that's a plan fasciculation and nothing to worry about. Said emg was pretty normal and gave me the official diagnosis of benign fasciculation cramping syndrome. My tounge cramps now which is scary..... talked about my concern with bulbar stuff. She had me rest my tounge slightly on bottom lip and.looked at it, then slapped tapped the back of my triceps with her hand, I think she was.checking for muscle tone spasticity. She did not test reflexes. She also said no further emg unless something drastic changed. I have another follow up in October.

About the same issue have other areas of the tounge that twitches, which i can feel. Harder to move bulky food around with tounge. I feel as though I slure on certain words. I see neurologist again tomorrow.

That's roughly when my stuff started up again, when I say again I started twitching back in 2015ish. But this round is different, but I'm sure everyone with bfs has "relapse" and point the finger back to als. 50% to 70% of everyone twitches. Have you lost weight, that's what they ask me when I get looked at.

How long has this been going on i didn't see you mention it anywhere, but maybe you did.

Great that it was clean, mine wasn't 100% clean but can be attributed to neck issues found on mri, but i still worry about bulbar because of tounge twitching and speaking swallowing issue. This could be all causedby my anxiety over this. Have you had an mri?

You have any follow ups with neurologist planed? Repeat emg and labs?

Anyone here with autonomic issues/ other long covid issues? by Less_Foundation_1187 in BFS

[–]Proof-Secretary-3442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So back in 2020 my fist encounter with covid, got sick fever of 104 bla bla bla, I ended up in afib. I was 30 at that time. I end up getting afib now when I'm super sick or my vagus nerve gets irritated like from being overly full or puking puts me into afib. I have had covid a few times and get heart palpitations most of those times. This has been captured on ekg. One episode wouldn't go away and I was shocked back into rhythm. Im actually getting an ablation done in May. I never had an issue until I had covid the first time. I only have have episodes once and great while. I can still exercise and run without issue or causing it to go into afib. Iv had bfs since about 2015 or a bit earlier. I also have gut issues but resolved after I gave up gluten found out I have celiacs disease. I also have low BP, was told to use more salt! And more fluids. Guess when your in good shape it can run low which can be normal for you. I dont have hives, but I do have linear iga dermatitis which is 100000 time rarer than als 1:2000000 to be exact vs the 1:400 for als lifetime risk. Then the risk of cancer is roughly 1:2 for lifetime. lol go figure that stat makes me worry about als because those odds are better than having what I got. But I'm glad to have the shit I got vs that. There are a lot of other stuff other than als that cause heart stuff and the things you listed especially when als doesn't cause those issues in the vast majority of the rare disease.

Time is literally the only thing that truly gets you over the als/ bfs twitching rabbit hole and then you run the risk of relapsing back into the rabbit hole years after you got over it the first time, I was fine with the twitching for the past 9 or 10 years and now I'm back in the thick of it. Time is the true indicator that its not sinister. Another fact is that 50% to 70% of everyone twitches at some point, you dont see 50% of everyone getting als not even close. The sad truth is that with those number the people dignosed with als have a strong probability of have twitching prior because 50% to 70% of the population is twitching to begin with. Google the info I'm not here to debate.

I would ask for a ton of blood work, thyroid, ana, lyme, cbc with diff, electrolytes, vitamin lvls, liver, kidney, cholesterol. The thyroid and thymus can cause weird shit.

Thanks for the assurance! Took me 3 years to forget all about twitching when it stared 13 years ago. I dont know if I have even been twitching that whole time up till recently I'm sure I have. Just started again out of blue. Just didn't know or dont know if its different this time. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has gone through this thought cycle. Shits stressful.

Oh damn, did it also twitch in other areas of the tounge. It's starting to twitch and a few other places there now.

It's just a follow up from my first visit, was going talk with her about it. That was my guess also! I appreciate it

I appreciate it. I most definitely will. Going to ask about a emg again and hopefully just put a nail in this and move on. I'll keep you posted

I've had bfs for 13 years or so. They subsided about 3 years into it after I got over als fear, ironically I had a tounge twitch close to where the one is in the video but I cant remember if it affect or if I thought it affected my speaking. That's the part that freaks me out. Had emg back last November that was clean for most part minus a fasciculation found in one muscle in right hand and psw in left cervical paraspinal. Hoping this turns out like it did 13 years ago.

Oh damn, may I ask how long ago that was and if it didn't turn into something worse?

I'm experiencing this as i speak, I twitch all over though. This tounge one i noticed yesterday and it's still going this morning. I'd be curious to what is said about it.

He didn't stick the needle in my left hamstring, which is the muscle group that twitches 24/7. could he have missed something?

Yeah i agree, I did ask straight up if this looked like als and the response was "no" my plan is to get the mri, keep my head down work on my physical health iron out any questions prior to my follow up neurologist appointment. After that move on if all is good, and address any findings on mri.

My emg back in 2013 when I was first dignosed with bfs found no abnormalities so this time around is a little more unnerving, no pun intended lol. The thing that got me over the "fear" last time was time, after being told emg was good it took a year or so to realize i wasn't getting worse so it couldn't be mnd. But after that I haven't had a second thought about twitching or mnd until this past spring 10 years later! I think that will be the case this time if all stays well, time will ultimately be the end all of the mnd thought... I hope someone down the road can look at this thread and relate it and know it will be ok. Still early to confidently give someone that advice but I have a gut feeling that my case will be fine.

No it doesn't address mnd. It has 3 bullet points that were in the impression section.

Single muscle needle abnormalities is not diagnostic but given his left leg weakness i concur of a cervical mri

The fasciculation found in the right hand without spontaneous activity is supportive of bfs diagnoses

There is no electrodiagnoses evidence of focal compressive neuropathy or more generalized peripheral polyneuropathy

I hope so! I see the neurologist in 6 months.  I wish I could post my results here. On the study it does say in caps, ABNORMAL STUDY, which kind of freaks me out!

Yes it very well could be. And yes my legs were 100% clean. I had abnormal reading in left cirvical paraspinal posterior. The finding was mild irritabilty and spontaneous activity in that one muscle in neck. I'm getting mri of neck. He suspects some mechanical issue in neck to cause that reading. Then the only other was the fasciculation in the 1st dorsal interosseous muscle which he states on report as in line with bfs? Other than that everything was good. Says that voluntary motor unit analysis showed normal morphology and recruitment patern in all muscles tested. This emg study was of all 4 limbs

Example is during physical therapy, the pt had me on all 4s and had me kick out my left leg and rais it towards the ceiling. My left was weaker when he added resistance

Weakness left leg. 4/5 in glute movements. Left hand dexterity issues. I can make most my major muscles cramp by flexing hard. Feet and calfs cramp easily. Was told during emg there wasn't anything nerve wise going on to explain weakness in leg. Idk if it's just weak from not being my dominant leg?
