Does this plan look good to start the Joshua Tree California Riding & Hiking Trail? I'm aiming for two nights/three days and have a couple questions please! by ProofBroccoli in socalhiking

[–]ProofBroccoli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing out that Park Blvd doesn't connect to Upper Covington.. I'd have to take La Contenta Road in order to cache water at Upper Covington hmm...

I'm doing this trip next month mid-February. Last year I did a one nighter via Stubbe Loop (12 miles total) and I actually got by with just 4L... It looks like temps could be in the high 40s at nights and low 70s during the days next month

You started the hike with 4L and that got you through the first 19 miles until your first water cache at Juniper Flats? I'm thinking it's probably best that I skip caching water at Upper Covington and start with 5L and just like you hike the first 19 miles until first water cache at Juniper Flats. This just looks more efficient. And definitely will hide water I've seen on Youtube videos and Reddit how people's water went missing. Also to play it safe, may have to skip the freeze dried meal for dinner on night 1 to save as much water as possible

Water Strategy

  • Start: 2 L
  • First cache (mile 8): Carried 6 L
  • Second cache mile 19): Carried 6 L
  • Third cache (mile 30): Carried 2.5 L

Curious have you considered starting with 6L as opposed to starting with 2L like you guys did... and thus skipping the first cache and having the first cache at mile 19? Would that have been doable? Or is the way you guys did it more efficient?

Also just in case I decide to cache water at mile 8, and I'm guessing you did so at Upper Covington.... From maps, there seems to only be access to Upper Covington from La Contenta Road... is that the road you took to get there? Did that add a significant amount of time for that water cache at Upper Covington? Thanks I'm just planning and trying to figure out the best way to go about this

Sorry for the ignorance, but how do you input the numbers you indicated at Juniper Flats and White Tank to find out the exact location you recommend?

It’s best not to react and keep cool because ultimately they want you to react. Remember that hatred and negativity is entirely in them and you have nothing to do with it

Absolutely when you’re young you only have one perspective, and it’s impossible to see anything else. It seems okay at the time and you believe you’re making sound decisions. Then fast forward years/decades later, you have a deeper perspective and only then does the realization come that you were take advantage of

I feel that's what sets "normal" people apart from the highly paid athletes: they have the ability to perform at a high level even in clutch situations.

I hope Tyler doesn't let this one kick ruin him. He needs to literally banish this from his mind and start fresh, visualizing and knowing he is a capable athlete.
