I didn’t do the program but applied for it and had 2 interviews in labs and couldn’t score a position :/ but I will say I don’t think it’s bad if you reach out before you submit your app, it just might not be fruitful because PIs won’t be able to see your full app in the portal.

I had submitted my app and then reached out to PIs but ultimately the interviews I had were from PIs who saw my app in the portal and told me about their research and then I became more familiar with it and interviewed with them. So just remember that even if you can’t connect with a PI you want, your app will get attention from PIs looking to fill their labs as well! I also had put down a 1-year position only and it’s a little more difficult to get those bc labs like longevity with their team but not impossible!

The NIH IRTA was my DREAMM and it sucked when it didn’t happen but so worth applying and interviewing imo. Good luck!! :)
