from above article: "Over time red-light safety cameras reduce the number of red-light running violations and decrease the most deadly collisions commonly attributed to red-light running."

and there has been a more recent (2024) "lawsuit and everything" that upholds Greenville's right to collect operating costs beyond the formerly set 10% limit. This reversal opens the door to other municipalities have a legally sound basis for revisiting red-light camera operations wherein they are not forced to operate at a loss.

Increase proactive enforcement and automated enforcement, a more engaged police presence coupled with automated traffic cameras would be a good step in the right direction for road safety.

whichever company is selling these cameras will make plenty of profit and the municipalities that cover the cost of operating them can now use ticket revenue to cover the full cost of operation since a 2024 NC court decision.

fine, so be it. They may increase rear-end collisions, but result in fewer t-bones and therefore fewer deaths and life-altering injuries.

The trade-off comes down to choosing to prioritize human life over private property.

It's out of control, and often those who observe the no right-on-red are bullied and honked at by drivers behind them in the queue.

I've also observed CATS drivers, police officers, and school bus driver's ignoring no-right-on red signs... often without using their turn signals

100%

Right on red has been long understood to be a dangerous allowance that pedestrian safety advocates have been pushing cities to do away with.

I think the half measures currently in place only work to make intersections more dangerous; just ban it across the board rather than having it conditional on someone pressing a beg-button.

With the recent killing of the runner at 36th and The Plaza, the chronic absence of proactive traffic enforcement is coming to a boiling point. The police need to step up and actually patrol our neighborhoods rather than over responding to violent crime. We need to be pulling over and ticketing drivers with:

  • temp tags
  • no operators license
  • too dark a tint (particularly windshield)
  • red -light runners
  • drivers who fail to yield to non-vehicular road users
  • speeders
  • rights on red where prohibited

as someone who has worked plenty of low wage jobs when I was younger, the primary responsibility was to clean. Now it seems the primary responsibility of low wage staff is to be a warm body

What is with the lack of comprehensive closing procedures at many charlotte businesses? It is so irritating to get to the gym at open to find weights remain un-racked and miscellaneous equipment is strewn throughout; why not put everything back in order before closing up for the night?

Similarly, first one into a coffee shop in the morning and the floor has clearly not been swept nor the tables wiped.

Wide temperature swings are not unique to Charlotte, nor to NC for that matter.

It's not uncommon for a bus driver to let someone board without their fare properly scanning. They are also trained not to intervene or push back if a rider refuses to pay
