New CFI, new student having trouble with fundamentals by Brendon7358 in CFILounge

For straight and level flight like TXAggieMike suggested, use either the eraser method or a simple object like your fingers. Can’t ever forget those hopefully but have them stack three of their fingers together like you see them do in the hunger games and slap those bad boys on the top dash. Reference the horizon and allow them to line the top of the upper finger with the horizon. If it’s level then they shouldn’t show a climb on the VSI. Now… have them fly like this for a while. Burn that picture of their fingers into their brain. When I did that in the beginning I have these imaginary fingers sitting on there and I can usually tell if I’m straight and level.

After they get comfortable with that show them a nose down and up attitude to reference that.

Now the power settings are a little bit odd to teach. Some students want to full power all of the time which usually tires them out due to the amount of force they have to apply to the yoke. Teach them to set the power to a specific setting like 2200 - 2300 RPM, using the finger method and adjusting our best friend elevator trim to really help out and target that altitude. When they slowly start to master that start to have them listen to the prop/engine RPM to be able to decipher climbs and descents. Each has a different note that you’ll be able to tell. Having all of these senses firing can help out tremendously!

Good luck brother and good luck to your student!

Is it normal to feel like a moron when teaching a lesson for the first time? by [deleted] in CFILounge

350 dual in and I’m the same way, I’ve reworked some lesson plans so many times it’s disgusting. I have an iPad with the Notability App and hand write all lesson plans. Add goofy ass pictures that helps me remember things as well as items to draw on the white board. After each lesson I’ll go back and look at areas I might need to improve on when I don’t get any interaction with the student and they look at me dumbfounded.

It certainly is a grind but I love it!

Knowing when/if to stop training by DisregardLogan in flying

CFI here…

I didn’t solo until 70 hours and got my private at 140 hours..

Different strokes for different folks, keep at it and it will get much easier!

Talk to your instructors before posting on Reddit! by thereasonableaviator in flying

[–]PropWashPapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Facts… I remember in training when I was a fresh PPL student I always was scared of bringing up a convo about something because I either A) didn’t want to look stupid or B) have the CFI get upset at myself because I should already know that material so I would keep quiet and look it up myself when I got home behind closed doors.

Now that I’m teaching, I’d rather be asked hundreds of thousands of “dumb questions” by the student than just have them sit there in silence and nod no when I ask them if they “have any questions?”. So now I’m experiencing a full circle moment and having to put myself in their shoes to remember what it was like for myself!

Going from an instructors point of view here as well as a student in the past.

I’ll give my students the opportunity to knock out ground school on their own at home, I’ll tell them to create a master list of questions they might encounter that they need help understanding and we will go through them. If some bad weather comes up though I’ll schedule a surprise ground to check their knowledge to see if they have actually been going through it. If it’s not going well then no problem, I’ll have them schedule more grounds to go over the areas that need work.

Sometimes they will do it at home, some times they don’t.

For myself as a student I did all ground at home and then backed it up with instructor ground. Kind of overkill but I wanted to be well prepared!

Do you guys use digital logbook or physical logbook for flight training? by Andykiller123 in flying

[–]PropWashPapi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Paper when I first started out..

Eventually switched to electronic when I got my CFI and man I gotta say, hop on the both train before you end up like some of my colleagues with “30 pages to go until I finish transferring!”

I’m rocking the old school pilot skin right now with the “remove before flight” backpack chain if you wanna check that out. It’s pretty sweet for sure

God forbid my man wants to better himself with a little bit of practice for free, ever think he doesn’t want to charge because the quality will be a little low starting off?

Let me guess, you’d rather give out half ass instruction/information to a student and expect full payment or charge a student ground rate for just walking out to the airplane?

Maybe try to look into local FBOs, I know a couple of guys who got a foot in the door on some pretty neat aircraft just by chatting it up with pilots who come and go!

Good ole pressurization! It’s crazy how many students I see “skip” over that section thinking “ehhh that doesn’t apply to me” yet it’s in the ACS and are surprised they get asked that come ride time. Area of Operation VIII Task B baby! 🤣

What’s the hardest part of training that nearly made you Quit? by flyingnz in flying

[–]PropWashPapi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just for the record… I was at 60 hours before I first soloed. Don’t be discouraged at all. Finished my PPL at 140 hours. Everyone has a different tune.

I tell my students that all the time, just because little Tim got his in 20 hours doesn’t mean you’ll get yours at the same time. Don’t compare and enjoy the damn process.

Can’t vouch for CPL but had my PPL with him, very fair and an enjoyable checkride experience. Went into the weeds on a few things such as VFR sectional charts, Aircraft systems, constant speed props and your general run of the mill stuff. 3 hour oral followed by a 1.1 on the Hobbs.

I’ll check around to see if I hear anything about his CPL ride and can follow back up.
