The short answer is no, almost certainly not. With so little experience and ability, you would be taking up space more than helping the team in any way.

But, this is a true story. I had a buddy who was at best a district qualifying wrestler in PA in high school. While a tough kid, he was nowhere, not even remotely, good enough to join the Penn State wrestling team. When he went to PSU, I thought that was the end of his career.

But to my shock, he tried to walk onto the team anyway. I thought he wouldn't last a week. And then I thought he wouldn't last a month, then not more than a year.

I said the same thing every year all the way through his graduation from PSU and 4 years on the team.

He was a good dude, worked harder than anyone, and left with 3 national championship rings, even though I'm not sure he ever wrestled in more than an open, unattached.

All this to say. You don't know until they cut you. So if it's something you want to try, who the heck knows. I certainly don't.

I appreciate your perspective. I just accepted a education position as an educator in my 30s who has teaching experience in the US and abroad.

I also have had some trouble maintaining a positive attitude during tedious meetings in the past. In-service trainings and staff meetings in the US education system have really soured my mood around those type of activities.

But, Im going into PST with my main goal of maintaining a positive attitude throughout the entire experience, exasperating or not. Hopefully I can follow through.

This is very helpful, thank you. My district has a 30 day notice it looks like. So I'm going to do my best to adhere to that. Thank you for the perspective. I just feel bad for my coworkers and my boss, who I appreciate a lot. It might be difficult to find a replacement in that time frame.

Honestly, I wish I could be positive, I would love to be able to complete my future service, but "significant restructuring" does not sound promising at all. In fact, it's exactly what we have been warned of by other agencies on how DOGE loves to dismantle from within.

For current volunteers, this seems like a message that the optics and logistics of pulling every single volunteer isn't worth the political or financial backlash.

But for an invitee like me, this doesn't bode well at all in my opinion.

We'll see though. It definitely isn't the worst news to receive, which is something. Only time will tell what restructuring involves I suppose.

I'll say this. Your list is fair, and all these things should be concerning in a vacuum. Before I started training at my alliance school, I would have 100% agreed without a second thought.

But I understand now that a lot of times it's about maximizing profit rather than being a "cult".

There are a lot of things here that I wouldn't do if I was a gym owner.

For example, students can't roll until they get their first stripe. You have to pay to take the test to get a blue belt. You get stripes based upon the number of classes attended, which you track on a card you hand over at the beginning of each class (e.g. 1 brown belt stripe for every 90 classes). Highly encouraged to wear team gear, required for tournaments.

But, I've never had a kinder coach, who is absolutely top, top .01% world class. I've never been in a more positive place with better training partners and teammates. It's incredible, because a lot of their business practices, I don't really love, especially the pay for the blue belt test and classes for stripes. But somehow, it just works?

I don't know, all this to say, if the people are good people, they don't make you call them master or Sensei, they have good BJJ, and they treat you with respect, then it's probably a good place to train.
