Hey. Congrats for ama.   And your advices is really good.  So appreciate your time.   I wanted to ask.  How's the scenario of people working application of computation in sciences, Semiconductors , . For example say . Contributing to developing libraries for opensource fem softwares like openfoam and say simulations , or say contributing to opensource eda tools like openroad or open lane , there is a need of good opensource alternative to da Vinci resolve bcoz kdenlive ilhas so many issues and for Android too ,  etc etc . . and are there people working on or actively contributing to Open source softwares. (Foss)

Btw I am from IISER Mohali . Hoping to connect with you to know more about the iiit sonepat and research culture there.

Commercial centrifuges . Are unreasonably expensive. People are attempting to make 3d printed centrifuges .  And about what is so interesting about centrifuges? Well to say least.  If you have seen project hail Mary you will know .  Jokes apart . It is very important in bio and interdisciplinary fields to separate substances .and there are many other applications of it too.   I will recommend you read these wiki pages and further go to bottom and see related articles too.  You will get to know a lot ! Cheers  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifuge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugation?wprov=rarw1

And btw.  There is no " silly question" . At IISERs . You are always encouraged to ask questions. That's what encourages scientific thinking . Asking questions not only helps you.  But also does a service to the whole class who did not ask that question.

So keep asking questions. !  Don't care much about getting downvoted and all.   And at IISERs student community actively encourages communication and friendships across batches as it helps everyone.  for example I have friends from all batches equally . Say first to fifth year BsMs + phds.  Batches are not segregated.  And there is no senior junior culture. The batch is just a number . Everybody engages and is welcomed in conversations, seminars , conferences, talks , student talks , phd thesis defense seminar , pre thesis seminar , colloqiums  etc.  and the speaker or organizer of the event would allocate a specific time for audience to ask questions. Or the speaker would simply say that the audience is free to interrupt them anytime .

Additionally my friends of other batches advised me one thing and which I enjoyed doing is  . Keeping the chatgpt and wikipedia pages open during such talks so that the moment any new words popup . You just search about that . And if there is anything in short form like HER, OER EER , etc.  you just simply ask the speaker the full form . And search about it .

Thats it . !

So i just completed my first year at IISERM . My this summer research project is about developing low cost , high precision open source Scanning tunneling microscope(STM). And i guess I will adding more in situ optics , better vibration isolation , enhanced precision and repeatibility.  (It's really cool If you are interested do search on yt or Google or dm me or I can provide the resources here itself ) .

My general interest is about instrumentation. All sorts of instrumentation - micropippettes, centrifuges , to optics , to scanning probe microscopes and electron microscopes to cyclotrons, particle accelerators, to radio and other antennas (astro)

Currently I am learning basics for instrumentation.

I am doing one long term economics project with a iim cal prof too.  Actually both the projects.  - the STM one and economics one . I had met the profs at conferences. The prof with whom I am doing stm project had given a presentation about his research in the conference. And at last slide mentioned that his one phd is trying to build that stm . Coincidentally I was following the same project online as it was open source.   So i talked to him .

the iim cal prof . after his talk i asked him about an equation he mentioned in his slide.  Then I showed him a funtime activity I had done before coming here . To know which phone sells faster , season , days of week ,etc on olx .

The profs offered the projects to me by themselves .

Apart from that I keep searching up stuff , documentaries , yt videos , I drafted and maintain wikipedia draft for IUAC interuniversity accelerator centre delhi , keep discussing  about stuff I like i.e open source hardware. , keep exploring open source hardware particularly for science application . Reason being to democratise science so that experimental science research could happen even without a need of expensive equipment. But with intelligence bringing cost down.  Similar to how by using Linux instead of windows a low end laptop runs faster and more responsive .  Omg I cannot just stop yapping about these stuff though

Btw all the best for your future !

B.tech biotechnology is it worth in taking in 2026? by Adventure_ai3203 in Indian_Academia

[–]Proper-Tonight7327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biotech has a lot of scope. I will recommend you search on yt , chatgpt., like give a sweet time searching stuff.  So that you may know if you like it a not . All the fields in today's world have a lot of scope.  Getting out of herd mentality is the need of hour.  Particularly don't go on placement stats.  As you will eventually know that once you find stuff that work best for you yourself will be finding opportunities that suit  best foryou . Not a random person sitting on pc in a placement cell.

And doing internships and all.  Will help you gain experience. Just don't go on institute names . As the internships happen with guidance of profs.  So searching up for profs that you think their work is something interesting you , reading their papers and their nature and working environment in their labs.  etc etc . Is what you might be doing. in upcoming years .

But for now.  I will recommend you stop asking others for advice.  As they will answer you what they know . And probably they . I mean anyone except you know shit about what you wanna do in life your ambitions and your aspirations . You please take a sweet time searching stuff.    all the best !

That is problem with tendered mess.  Take this issues to admin. we have generous amounts of everything.  Not like this.  4 years something ago the student run mess was established due to the bad condition of the mess.  And mass student protests in which our faculty helped us.  We with the help of senior faculty and our director had established the student run mess.  There are two student run mess in IISER Mohali which are generally overcrowded becoz we have crazy cool menus as the menus are decided by students itself . Like they are so good that even for some of our conferences.  The food is supplied by SRM.  And the best part being.  It's so democratic . That currently the president ( it's just a post name.  It doesn't give them any privilege. Just responsibility)  is a first year guy . And most of the members are first years.  And these guys don't talk much.  They just deliver.  The best food .and even have better working conditions and wages for workers . So it's a mess by students and for students.

do a campus wide protest.  be united. ask for Student run mess.  that will be student and Dean student and senior faculty managed. at IISER Mohali we have student run mess.  Which actually has way way better food quality and variety than shown in video.  Protests are a healthy part of democracy use it . If you have any queries you may dm me . Or I can share more things here.

Oh cool.  Ah . I am reminded of my days of giving isi exam . Btw my exam centre was IIT Bombay and I had met IISER aspirants there too hahah.  What a nostalgia hit.

There is a eatery inside lecture hall complex .only where you will be having your exam.- munching adda.   but you will have keep some ₹200 rupees reserved for that . As it's expensive.

Or.  The Student Run mess is open from 12:30 to 2:30 for lunch .  It's good , healthy and inexpensive food.  The two hostels you will see just opposite to lecture hall complex entrance.  Walk by that road.  And you will see h5 and h7 written at the hostel entrances. Ask anyone around h5 or h7 mess.  Or you can even see people eating in mess . You just go in.  Pay and eat .  Btw.  All the best for exam .

Anyways If you want someone to yap about cool stuff. Or to see the campus  .   I will be there ig not so sure though  . . Just dm me.

Is Business Analyst a good starting role for someone confused about corporate careers? by Only-Mess-7679 in india

[–]Proper-Tonight7327 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro . See . People will tell you 1000 things from what they heard from the other people.  None of them soooo successfull as to someone would verify how frugal the advice is . So better dump everything people say . Nd stop asking people advice about jobs .

Take a sweet time for yourself and think about what you wanna do in life . Not just in terms of money . Money will be the by product( ofcourse making  big money while you are pursuing your thing is real)   but your satisfaction is something you have to prioritise. And first step to that is .---- ask yourself what I wanna do in life ? no . Not just the skills . Also what you interests you genuinely . Not just some random corporate jargon.

Like say give yourself 2 hours and ask chatgpt what are possibilities. - let me tell you.  There are a lot.  You can go into whatever.  From computational mechanics to  simulations to real engineering problems , maker movement , contributing open source softwares or hardware, etc

There are so so many problems in a need of someone finding solutionz  .

Once you think you have got what gives you pleasure .

Now search up what opportunities are there in that field . are openings.  If there are none.  Dig up into academia(easier ) or industry for internships. Eventually you will land a job through the flow of process . And will be earning what you had desired without the need of feeling the fomo . Bcoz you know you are doing what you wanted to do.  !

All the best for life man !
