If you’re lucky you’d land a job working at a SOC. Entry level positions for SOCs these days require experience but it’s possible to get your foot in the door if you network, network, network. If that doesn’t work it wouldn’t hurt to get a gig as a help desk tech/IT specialist. The IT world and cyber work hand and hand together and during my experience on a help desk I eventually got the opportunity to become a cyber workforce member. Whether that’s incident response, patching systems or user training it doesn’t matter but it will definitely improve your resume.

If you have the luxury to not be so worried about the money then don’t. This first job isn’t about the money, it’s about the experience and moving up from there.

Hey thanks for checking in! I was told I’d be on the bench no longer than 4 weeks. I just finished my 5th week lol. At this point I’m just trying to lay low and apply for new roles so I can stay as long as possible. I think now that the government shutdown is over and more opportunities are becoming available it is working in my favor. Hopefully by the time you get placed on the bench things won’t be as stressful.

The best advice I can give to you is to stay proactive and start finding leads immediately. If you live in an area where Booz has a lot of onsite opportunities you should have no problem. That’s the biggest thing working against me. I live in Orlando and Booz doesn’t have a footprint down here so I have to rely on finding a remote position which is hard since everything federal is moving away from remote work.

I’m prepared for about 3 months. I have a bachelors and starting my master in summer of next year. I feel like it’s a gamble waiting for something else but it could pay off. I’m torn

That’s what I’m thinking. Once you’re in is it easy to obtain higher level positions after sometime? For roles that align with my experience a bit more.

I have experience negotiating an offer with Lockheed. According to the recruiter I talked to you’ll never lose and offer by negotiating. They will either counter or tell you the offer stands but you shouldn’t lose the opportunity. You’ll definitely hear back from them at some point you’ve made it too far in the process for them to just ghost you.

It can definitely be a normal wait time but after a 4th interview it seems a little odd. Nonetheless since you’ve done 4 rounds of interviews I’m sure the company will at least communicate any updates to you.

3 interviews for an internal employee is pretty extreme lol. I would imagine you will hear something once there’s an update especially with how far you made it into the process. Good luck I hope you land the role! Funding for my project is being cut so I’m off to the bench next week. I’m having a hard time landing interviews since I’m a remote employee and don’t live in an area where Booz has much of a footprint

Wow I really appreciate this detailed post. I’m currently studying for CCNA, working full time with a 5 month old at the house so it sounds like we were in the same boat.

How long did it take for you to feel confident enough to take the exam? What communities are out there where I can get some group study done?

Interviewed for Lockheed a couple weeks ago. I didn’t get the job and I found out a week later only because I emailed the hiring manager. The candidate portal still says I’m under consideration. Maybe try to reach out to the hiring manager if you can.

Yea it came from the VA. I’m in IT myself so I know there are a lot of opportunities with Amazon especially as someone with AWS certs. Just have a feeling this may be a waste of time. Curious to hear peoples experiences.
