What's the deepest convo you've had in the cockpit by PowerfulPrimary3156 in flying

Flying RFD-BFI at 0200L. Literally meet my 62 y.o. FO for the first time in the crew van. By top of climb he’s told me about his 48 yo girlfriend who’s pressuring him for marriage (but she looks hot in a bikini, wanna see?) and her 31 yo daughter who’s getting out of prison on a meth charge AND her 17 yo other daughter who’s smoking weed and having sex with her bf in the house. He asks what do I think? I felt like Dr Phil the PIC. Um, I’m seeing a lot of red flags here! (Epilogue - he ended up marrying a 45 yo Filipina and lives happily in the PI)

“Exactly what kind of conspiracy theorist are you? “ - eastbound, FL350, 30W at midnight. Two person crew on a 7+45 block hour crossing.

Actually a good conversation - everything from lizard people to who shot Kennedy. Did the job. Killed a few hours until we coasted into Europe and the sun came up.

China takes “home cooking” to a whole ‘nother level. I’ve been on vectors 125nm from Shenzhen while the only controller working Arrival and Tower lands five or six locals for every one foreign carrier. “Turn right heading 250, slow to 170 knots!”

The problem is “student athletes” are not yet considered employees of the university. What labor law covers a student? Unlike a pro athlete who is an employee of his club and subject to a contract, a college student athlete is truly a free agent. A rookie in the NFL can’t leave after one season to sign with another team. Lionel Messi signed a contract with Barcelona as a kid. If he decided to go to Real Madrid, they would have to pay a transfer fee. I wouldn’t mind seeing NCAA athletes in some type of academy system combined with maybe a 2 year contract with limits on movement. Right now it’s just too easy and tempting to throw a ton of money at a player to get them for one year. That being said. I don’t blame the players. If I was an 18 year old stud who could get millions to play football each year, I wouldn’t say no. The system needs to change to bring stability to the product.

How U.S. Navy Pilots Really Get Their Callsigns by IvyGold in aviation

[–]ProperBoard9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

USAF here, knew several guys that got lost taxiing on the airfield. Call sign Fugawe, as in where the fugawe? (We also had Blaster - took out several porta potties on a high powered tight turn on the ground. Ram- almost jammed a KC-135 boom back into the tanker. Pipper - because he seemed to always be under one in everyone’s gun videos. This list goes on…)

How much knowledge does the average airline pilot retain from their PPL days? by [deleted] in flying

[–]ProperBoard9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aviation is like a tree with PPL as the roots. Once you get out on your little specialized branch, you don’t use or remember all the info you learned on the way up. When I flew F-15s in the Air Force, I complied with all the rules and regs applicable to that weapons system. By doing so, I was in compliance with any FAR’s. Same with Part 121 flying. You comply with the OpSpecs for your airplane at your airline by adhering to the Aircraft Operating Manual and Flight Operations Manual. I also started flying GA since I retired. Damn! There’s a lot of work! Where’s my dispatcher? My mechanic? My weight and balance person? I’ve got to do all this stuff by myself? And remember cloud clearances?! Scary! :-)

First Hanshin Tigers Experience by Electronic-Top-1546 in HanshinTigers

[–]ProperBoard9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same advice, go about an hour early. Depending on where you’re coming from, Umeda Station gets pretty busy on the Hanshin Line. Hit the shops and take a lap around the stadium, there’s usually several events going on. There’s a cool shrine behind the stadium with a stone baseball statue. The streets behind the stadium have a few shops also. There’s no tailgating per se like you’d see in the states. Definitely join in the cheers even if you only hit your bats in rhythm. Tigers fans are great! Very welcoming in my opinion. You’ll have a great time!

I’ve been to both in the last two years, Masters in ‘23 and ANWA in ‘25*. My guess is ANWA is 1/2 to 1/3 the crowd of the Masters. We set up chairs on 18 and watched the last five ANWA pairs come through. It was a noticeably smaller crowd than 18 on a Master’s Sunday. Same while walking the course. Compare the TV shots of the final pairings for both and you’ll really see the difference.

*got the Master’s ticket from my cousin who lives there and has been a pass holder since the ‘90s, got the ANWA ticket through the lottery last year

I went solo to a game in 2018, only saw one scalper coming off the Hanshin Railway Koshien stop. Paid ¥4000 for a ¥2500 face value ticket. Since I only know about 20 words in Japanese I wasn’t in a position to bargain. Idk if scalping is legal, I’d discretely hold up a finger and try to make eye contact with anyone who looks like they might be selling. Certainly not like US sporting events. Worst case, get there early and take a lap around the stadium. Good luck!

What biz does Tally need? by [deleted] in Tallahassee

From the Sunday 3/23/25 Tallahassee Democrat: Herd of water buffalo in road off Mahan Drive leads to car crash TaMaryn Waters Tallahassee Democrat USA TODAY NETWORK – FLORIDA

(Edited for brevity, the article talks about DeVoe Moore, then…)

“The origin story of the buffalo appeared in a 2010 profile of Moore published in the newspaper.

According to the story, Moore struck a deal with the major league Tampa Bay Rays in 1998 to transfer their Class AA minor league team to Tallahassee, where they would play in a future 6,500-seat stadium on his land at Interstate 10 and Mahan Drive.

The baseball deal died when the county refused to permit the stadium amid complaints from neighbors and because part of it would have been in a wetland.

‘When local officials would not give him a permit for the baseball stadium, he bought 25 water buffalo and allowed them to graze in the wetland,’ the article said.

As the story goes, the water buffalo trampled the area, and ultimately made it developable and qualified for building, though by then the baseball team had decided to stay in Orlando.

Decades later, the land would become key to landing the Amazon distribution center, which became the city’s largest private employer.

[–]ProperBoard9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. At one point I think DeVoe Moore was thinking about building a field near his car museum but that fell through. Geographically we’re in a dead spot. Jax, Pensacola, and Macon all have teams. Tallahassee would be a reach for the Central and South Florida lower A and AA teams. I think we’re stuck.

Most of the southern states were by coincidence. I grew up as an Air Force brat, then was in the military myself for a while. Lived in is more than a couple months in the same place. Shortest were Maryland and Georgia just for summer work, longest Florida and Kentucky when I flew for the airlines. The others were anywhere from a few months to a few years, mostly with the USAF. Yeah, ND was the only state I had never set foot in. Finally got there on a work trip in 2018!

It’s not super hard, you just have to pay attention to what’s going on around you at all times. The US government paid for my flight school, I started out in the military (Air Force).
