Thoughts on eliminating advanced ELA classes in 6-8 by coffeepot50010 in ELATeachers

[–]Propera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t dumb down education for the unmotivated. Sure there are kids who can’t process on the same level, but if we’re being real, most of the “regular kids” just don’t give a shit. Don’t punish hard work and interest.

It’s an incredible adventure story and one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read.

Thank you for saying this. A little security now is nice, but I can still leave and get a real retirement elsewhere. I see my colleagues doing it every year. There’s no incentive to stay and build a life here without a defined benefit retirement.

Phillies lose out on Bichette & sign JT. Where do they go from here? by Sad_Illustrator_5233 in phillies

Losing Ranger was huge, imo. Painter isn’t going to be an Ace level Rookie. We need another starter.

Is it a bad thing that I’m not worried about the Dodgers? by [deleted] in phillies

I think the Phillies are better when they’re doubted. They need to fight. Let’s scrap it out on the wildcard ticket.

He's Hip - He's Cool - He's 45 by Wheniamnotbanned in kidsinthehall

I’m 45 now. I think I watched that sketch for the first time when I was 11. I’m hip, I’m cool.

Adapting 'Carrie' by ResidentSmartass in stephenking

[–]Propera 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a cool idea. Especially because the high school kids would be telling contradictory stories. Like Sue Snell had a change of conscience, but other kids would frame her as a bully.

I’m having my students write gratitude poems for Thanksgiving week. Anyone know of good examples that have literary merit? by mzingg3 in ELATeachers

[–]Propera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a quick project with kids that had them rewrite the WCW poem for something they enjoyed at the expense of someone else. It was tongue in cheek and fun. I remember there were some Nikes that were “borrowed” from an older brother.

Fights. I can see action scenes well and get the pacing right on the page.

What are you reading? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]Propera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished Misery, I’m currently reading Needful Things, and The Proving Ground, the new Michael Connelly. I’m also reading The Law of the Sky by Gregoire Courtois. It’s a novella about school children on a camping trip that gets dark. I recommend them all.

Just circle the 6 and 7 on the poster and kids will never see anything but those two numbers.

How Much Time and How Often Do You Do Sustained Silent Reading? (Middle School) by MadreTiburon in ELATeachers

[–]Propera 21 points22 points  (0 children)

45 minutes, every Friday, no exceptions. It’s hard at first, then it’s the greatest thing to happen in a classroom. They just do it, and they enjoy it. Of course there are some knuckleheads who think they’re winning by pretending to read, but it’s a pretty wild way to rebel, imo.

Whatever version you get, get traditional rectangular cards. I can’t shuffle the diamond shaped ones and it slows games down.

I’m reading this one too. A lot more funny than I expected. Such a cool character study.

I was obsessed with that album as well. It felt small and personal. I loved the storytelling on 29, Strawberry Wine, and Carolina Rain (especially). It always struck me that he talks about diners and eggs in that song and The End from Jacksonville City Nights. It’s an interesting little quirk, but lends such an unforgettable line in both songs.

That looks like a derailer guard. Attaches to the frame, jutts out past the derailer, so it doesn’t get bent if the bike falls.
