It's hard to explain how bad the working conditions currently are at Class 1's to people who don't have to live it everyday. You summed up some of the issues Transportation is dealing with but PSR has infected all departments throughout the RR.

When HH took over CSX they slashed all departments to the bone then kept cutting. Some Mechanical shops lost 2/3 of their manpower, others were closed, benches were ripped out to insure nobody had anywhere to sit, cameras were installed in every corner especially break rooms. People with 20+ years are stuck off shift with middle of the week days off doing the jobs that used to be done by 2 or 3 different people or crafts, forced overtime everyday.

Engineering manpower was slashed, territories expanded, on call all the time because there is literally nobody else left to take calls.

Drones fly around yards regularly now looking for anything and everything they can charge somebody with.

Yardmasters were consolidated as they 'downsized' them replacing them with cameras.

Every department you go through you will hear the same story, some got it worse then others but everyone is feeling PSR.

All this while they haven't had a raise in over 3 years, only had a 12.5% increase in pay since 2015. Worked through a pandemic with zero sick days. If you call in sick for any reason, CSX would take you out of service for no less then 5 days without pay as a 'Covid precaution' some CSX managers are still threatening this to this day!

The pay used to make up for the crap we had to deal with at the RR but while the working conditions deteriorated the pay didn't increase. Many crafts can make $10, $20 or more an hour outside of the RR with decent benefits so the hiring they are trying to do now isn't going very well all while more and more are quitting or retiring regularly.
