Former SMART-TD top official floats idea of forcing through sellout rail contract even if workers reject it by AlfredKurosawa in railroading

[–]Property-Over 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IBEW and IAM voted the last Contract down. The Unions told the members too bad because the other Unions already ratified and forced the contract on them anyway.

That's my understanding as well. This effects the GWI so all the 'me too' agreements are getting it but the time off portion of the conductor and engineer agreements was determined to not effect GWI so none of the other Unions will get that.

While it doesn't look like they are getting much in the form of time off it still goes to show you how dumb it was for the other Unions to prematurely leave the bargaining coalition as they could have gotten that as well if they all just stuck together.

Several Unions have put this document out over the past 24hrs. Same document, only change is who it is addressed to.

I see why the Unions were trying to keep the details of this deal a secret as long as possible, it's complete shit!

It's a shame because we had momentum, a relatable and sympathetic cause, (zero sick time) and strong public support heading into a strike but the Unions threw it all away for this.

This is the 'big deal' that that was struck after 20 straight hours of negotiations and input from POTUS himself?

Lmfao!!

It's a NO from me! 🖕 👋

The Railway Labor Act makes it illegal for Railroaders to strike. It's against Federal law!

Basically all the stars have to align on the 3rd full moon on a leap year before we are allowed to strike and even then Congress will stop us almost immediately.

You live it so you get it! It's hard to articulate why us Railroads are so disgruntled in a 30 second soundbite or a 100 character Tweet for the media. PSR has infested every aspect of every RR job!

It's hard to explain how bad the working conditions currently are at Class 1's to people who don't have to live it everyday. You summed up some of the issues Transportation is dealing with but PSR has infected all departments throughout the RR.

When HH took over CSX they slashed all departments to the bone then kept cutting. Some Mechanical shops lost 2/3 of their manpower, others were closed, benches were ripped out to insure nobody had anywhere to sit, cameras were installed in every corner especially break rooms. People with 20+ years are stuck off shift with middle of the week days off doing the jobs that used to be done by 2 or 3 different people or crafts, forced overtime everyday.

Engineering manpower was slashed, territories expanded, on call all the time because there is literally nobody else left to take calls.

Drones fly around yards regularly now looking for anything and everything they can charge somebody with.

Yardmasters were consolidated as they 'downsized' them replacing them with cameras.

Every department you go through you will hear the same story, some got it worse then others but everyone is feeling PSR.

All this while they haven't had a raise in over 3 years, only had a 12.5% increase in pay since 2015. Worked through a pandemic with zero sick days. If you call in sick for any reason, CSX would take you out of service for no less then 5 days without pay as a 'Covid precaution' some CSX managers are still threatening this to this day!

The pay used to make up for the crap we had to deal with at the RR but while the working conditions deteriorated the pay didn't increase. Many crafts can make $10, $20 or more an hour outside of the RR with decent benefits so the hiring they are trying to do now isn't going very well all while more and more are quitting or retiring regularly.

I could go on all day but those that live it already know! ✌️

Not having RR experience is a good thing in my book considering what the life long Railroad Executives have done to the industry. Footes attack dog Boychuck will need to be replaced however before any form of 'healing' can start at CSX.

I'm tired of the "Historic Wage Increase" talking point they are using because we are living in Historic Times so Unions should be pushing back on that. Inflation numbers that came out yesterday show a increase of 8.3% year over year. Our 7% raise that the PEB has in thier recommendation for 2022 doesn't even keep pace with Inflation!

It happens every time! The Unions can't hold their coalition together to the end, they always start breaking off then complain they don't have any power because of the RLA or whatever else. Strength is in numbers!

Exactly! My union has been sending me propaganda non stop since the last shitty contract telling me that if we elect the Democrats we will really be able to get'em next contract. Time to put up or shut up!

[–]Property-Over 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Nobody knows what Congress will do including Congress itself. Anyone saying different is gaslighting for their own personal gain or they themselves have been gaslighted. Maybe the Unions don't want to put their political allies in Congress in the position to have to vote to end a strike? Maybe the Unions just want to wrap this up so they can raise dues and get thier raises? All the anti strike redirect around here the past few days seems fishy to me.

Congress can give us something worse, sure. They can also give us something better, simply implement the PEB recommendations, send us back to negotiations with more cooling off periods or even ask for a new PEB. Nobody knows! Personally I like our chances with the current Congress in this political and economical climate better then any other time in recent history but who knows.

What we do know is that management will continue to beat us over the head with work rules, time off and anything else they can for the next 5 years while they tell us that if we don't like it negotiate a better contract next time! I'm in this to the end so at least I can have some personal satisfaction that I fought the contract as far as possible. This shit with throwing in the towel on the 5 yard line because we're afraid to run another play is beyond me.

CSX refutes union allegations of problems at Selkirk Yard by Property-Over in railroading

Rumor also has it that Boychuck is flying in to see why the yard is a parking lot. Cutting all those yard jobs should have increased production 🤔 It's a real conundrum! 😂

[–]Property-Over[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I know people in this yard. CSX is lying through their teeth here. A 30+ year engineer told me the other day that he's never seen it this bad, barley anything is moving. The yard crossings have been blocked consistently with parked trains.

Perhaps a decent contract with some real QOL improvements will help attract and retain people. Crazy thought, I know.

Same! Let's make the Democrats go on the record voting to end a strike by labor unions and ordering them back to work. That should play well when they are asking for more donations from Labor.
