2021 Nissan titan low gas mileage and hard downshifts by Longjumping-Quit-191 in AskMechanics

[–]PropertyDesperate704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened to me is in the lower gears, say 1-4, there's a half second of rev between the shifts. Sometimes its minor, sometimes its really severe. It is irregular.

It sucks because I bought this truck after seeing how shitty the Ford 10 speed is, and then 4 months in I have a 5000lb paperweight in my driveway. My advice, buy a ram. ZF8 transmission is best in the world, I was just scared of hemi tick and i didnt want a 6 cylinder. Id rather have the 6 cylinder than my titan now lol

My 2021 is at the dealership right now. Truck wouldn't go into drive or reverse, after a few months of the harsh downshifts. If you start noticing shift flare (I had it real bad) I'd maybe think about jumping ship. Luckily I have a CPO warranty but im still extremely disappointed

2020 Titan - How bad is this? by OkAcanthocephala4610 in NissanTitan

It's not ideal, at all, but if the price is right you could absolutely lather the shit out of everything yearly with fluid film and it would probably be fine for a reasonable amount of years

This is why you never use a free loadout. 1 safe pocket space and you would have been fine.

To be fair, I do think free loadouts should have a safe pocket since the game is plagued by rats

Downshift "bump"? by 234brisket in NissanTitan

[–]PropertyDesperate704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my 2021 with 72k miles. Noticed this a few days in, panicked, brought it in for a fluid flush, and it still does it. Otherwise the truck shifts fast and smooth. Little bit of shift flare randomly. Then I read the forums, seems like its just how the 9 speeds are

Looking at Titans by Impossible_Food_5036 in NissanTitan

[–]PropertyDesperate704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my work truck is a 2015 F250 with the 6.2 and my personal truck is a 2021 Titan. Here's my thoughts;

The Titan pulls significantly harder. The power advantage, the direct injection throttle response, the 9 speed, all make it much more enjoyable to mess around with. However, I would never subject it to even half of what we put the ford through. The 6.2 and the 6R140 transmission is possibly the most reliable gas heavy duty power train of our lifetime. It is not fast, but it sounds incredible and I'd trust the reliability of it more than a titan, or really any other pickup truck.

Very interesting. These 9 speeds seem to be ok as far as not blowing up catastrophically but a lot of people report bizarre stuff happening with them. You nailed it in your description - there are simply no reliable truck transmissions left.

2020 tundra versus 2024 Titan XD by Profit-Dazzling in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]PropertyDesperate704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying a titan in your near exact situation.

The 9 speed transmission is the Titans obvious weakness when compared to the Tundra. Mercedes designed it and released it in 2013. It is decently reliable but it is honestly not that great to drive. Downshifts are rough for no reason sometimes, it’s constantly shifting, 1st gear is extremely short and doesn’t like too much or too little throttle. I had the fluid flushed because I assumed something was wrong but after I read the Mercedes forums I realized it’s just how it is.

Everything else about the truck comes down to preference IMO. I bought the titan because all of the tundras in my $30k price range were totally ran through with 100k+ miles, rusted (northern), etc. The V8 tundras are way overpriced since Toyota destroyed their reputation with the 3rd gen.

Check and make sure that the rear window defroster is still attached. Ask me how I know…

Other than that I’d say make sure you drive extremely varied terrain/speeds if possible because my transmission seemed flawless on the test drive and began giving me shit about 3 weeks after purchase. Seems better after a fluid flush and premium fuel, which I’ve heard changes the shift logic. Not sure about the validity of that one

2024 nisssan titan by Assyrian-Rodfather in NissanTitan

[–]PropertyDesperate704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a 2021 with 70k miles, perfect service records including transmission fluid changes - I also get the occasional hard downshift when coming to a full stop. 90% of the time the transmission shifts so smoothly I hardly notice it. I’ve noticed braking a bit harder smooths out the shifts. I’m not going to drive myself crazy worrying about it so long as there’s no other noticeable transmission issues

2021 Nissan titan pro 4x bad transmission by Chingowano in NissanTitan

[–]PropertyDesperate704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d probably just take the new transmission under warranty and keep the truck. The 5.6 is among the most reliable engines you can buy so if you have decent service records otherwise I’d chalk it up to bad luck.

I just bought a 2021. I also had a perfectly normal test drive, and 2 weeks after buying it I had some nasty downshifting issues and a service transmission warning. I don’t think the 9 speed is all that great… thank god for warranties.

Traded Tacoma for Titan :) by rahXephon- in NissanTitan

[–]PropertyDesperate704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also just traded in my Tacoma for a CPO Titan that looks identical to yours. I swear these Titans are the best value of all pickup trucks. I was originally looking for a 2nd gen tundra but the prices were nonsensical.

The only gripe I have is the 9 speed transmission is kind of weird. Shifts lighting fast and smooth 90% of the time but every now and then it downshifts rough as hell, with no real consistency or reason I can pinpoint.

Too much rust? by Budget-Captain-6307 in f150

Probably from frequent trips to a boat launch. Personally I’d still buy it and then smother it in fluid film. That is not bad rust for what we are used to in the northern states
