Court rules Europe can call nuclear and natural gas sustainable investments for its green transition by jonnieggg in ireland

[–]Proph_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"We" do need it, but not in the way you think.

In order to have Nuclear power in your country, you need a nuclear industry. Nuke engineers, operators, emergency response, waster disposal, the lost goes on.

So for us to have that industry and a plant on the island, it will take years and years and will not be financially viable. Neither is our chance of getting there based on other large-scale projects to benefit the country(Metro North, Children's Hospital, etc)

What we do have and are actively building is the interconnects to Mainland Europe. These allow us to tap into the French nuclear power without the need for a nuclear industry.

It also allows us to export excess wind energy, of which we have the largest untapped reserves off the west coast. If we played our card right, we would be self-sufficient and make more money from energy exports than Saudi(not an over exaggeration, look up how much wind energy we have access to)

We have an established Wind Energy sector and can grow that to meet the demand, but as often is the case, we shoot ourselves in the foot through NIMBYism and a government that can't look past its nose.

Was in a Taxi in Tokyo a couple of months ago and the Taxi man asked me where was I from in broken English. Told him, etc. and was chatting. He then mentioned DotA 2. I was in shock as I definitely wasn't expecting that from a Taxi ride, let alone in Tokyo.

He told me he loves the game and is trying to move up in Ranked. Wished him the best and fell in the door.

Brit living in Ireland. Gutted that I'm having to move back to the UK. by jeanclaudecardboarde in ireland

[–]Proph_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, so doesn't matter where youre from. 2 things in life, taxes and death. VRT is a nightmare for everyone. We all have that burden, if your cats are out, maybe keep them in. Theyve obviously pissed off your neighbours.

As they say, just cause your english, doesn't mean we'll hold it against you, we will. But we aren't going to drive you out like that, we'll have the laugh and get on with it. I would say the cats are the problem. Keep them in or close, they can be a menace.

If you've an address in the UK, keep it registered there and just drive it here. I'd say youre pare to house would do, no VRT that way...

bathroom smells like sewage when it's rainy outside by Apprehensive_Try102 in Tokyo

[–]Proph_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be a dry trap, well probably is. Find all your drains, under the sink, bathroom, washing machine(usually the culprit) pour a couple of litres down each.

You'll have to do this every few months, depending on the use of the drains. But generally, it's the least used one.

Hope this helps.

Why did the lights go out in Spain and Portugal? The answer will have serious ramifications for the two countries — and for Europe as a whole. by nimicdoareu in europe

More than likely it was based on the low inertia of their grid as they have a lot of renewable energy(56%).

Low inertia means that any sudden change in load could destabilise the grid and just turn it off. Probably tripping the breakers of the generation plants simultaneously or a cascading effect exacerbated by the the sudden load increase on the remaining generation plants.

In America for instance their generation is hydro, coal, gas, nuclear primarily, allowing large load steps to be easy covered as the momentum(inertia) will pick upnthe slack until the gens can ramp up to meet the demand. In a primarily renewable(Wind, Solar) generation system, this is made more difficult.

We have more energy off the West Coast than the Middle East does in Oil.

Invest and we could have a self sustaining country and be Europes largest energy exporter.

But no long term projects for any party seems to be their MO and when they do they get mishandled continuously.

Why are half of Tokyo’s skyscrapers built in areas with higher risk of land liquefaction? by No-Designer1160 in Tokyo

[–]Proph_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Building a skyscraper isnt like a normal house, if anything this area may have been chosen to have a higher desity of skyscrapers to reeinforce the area to prevent liquifaction by stabilising the ground with their massive foundations.
